electrical gremlins

after 10 years of trouble free motoring something other than service items has gone wrong on the 993 - it s a weird electrical fault and I suspect an earthing problem but any suggestions gratefully received as I expect its trivially easy to fix if I can track it down and as the dealers 50 miles away its a lot of hassle to get the car over there if its something simple

it started with instrument lights going out when switching from side lights to main beam. Switch back to sidelights and they come back on. Further checking reveals off side rear side light also goes out when switchng to main beam and comes back when on side lights. all other side lights seem to be working OK. At one stage the instrument lights recovered and worked as normal but the tail light was still out when on main beam. Instrunment lightsthen went again when on main beam. I think the fog lights may also be affected but haven't had time to check through all possible combinations and work out what happens with them.

All ideas gratefully received - thanks

You may wish to check that your high beem contacts in the steering colum indicator switch as they can heat up and melt the plastic holding the contacts in place if you have upgraded your lights to higher wattage bulbs.

I had a similar problem when sometimes all sidelights would come on, sometimes one side or the other and as I recall occasioanl problems with instrument lighting. If I switched lights on and off or waggled the switch a little to problems was cured until I needed the lights again, then same situation occurred.
Finally came to the conclusion that the fault was with the main light switch and this was confirmed by my OPC . I have now changed the switch (£42 I think) and all has been OK since.

Hope this helps

Michael
