997 Battery went completely flat (conditioner fuse had gone and I did't realise / check) Disconnected battery and put on charge. Put battery back on again. Now it won't start, warning lights / messages saying ABS fault, traction control fault, Drivers window dropped down "on its own" and won't now go back up at all. Now central locking doesn't work or key in the lock, and alarm wont set. The whole electrical system seems "posessed" Help!

Mmmm, a visit to OPC is what I feared would be the solution. The problem now being how I get it there given that if it won't start. I never relish the thought of one of those recovery vehicles hoisting it up on the back and lashing it down, but I guess I may have no alternative, I'll just have to look away when they come for it ;-)
Given the suggestion of the battery being toasted, is there any chance that a new battery might at least be enough to get it started?
Also do I have to replace with a genuine Porsche battery for warranty purposes or is it ok / advisable to go for a different make?
I have a feeling this latter point is another dumb question that I know I probably already know the answer to!!

If you plan on continuing your Porsche warranty then the fitment of a genuine battery is usually considered essential.
Your best bet is to the battery yourself and fit it. The PSM warning will clear with a simple drive around the block, the windows can also be simply reset by powering the windows up and down a couple of times whilst continuously holding the button.
If the remote on the key fails to work open the door with the key and then switch on the ignition, and during the first 10-20 seconds or so use the door open/close button on the remote.
If there are any other warnings a drive to the OPC to rest them but you should be good to go.

The windows were going down and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree...
The car started fine with the battery bypassed when we jump started the car (a dead cell can pull down even a jump start)
I dropped it off at the OPC for them to fit the battery as it was booked in for a service anyhow..
Yes a Porsche battery is required for warranty continuation, luckily the OPC fitted it whilst doing the service- so at no cost to me, just the cost of the battery and acid pack.
As Nick says it may clear all faults after driving for a few miles and maybe worth doing yourself if you feel you can.
You'll get a 10% discount off the battery but its still not cheap []

I had a series of similar faults when Halford's changed my battery (and it worried them at first but they called the OPC)...
Windows -- just keep trying!
ABS and PSM. Advice from OPC Hatfield was drive forward 20m, full lock left, full lock right, drive forwards 20m. And yes it worked.
But sadly, if you can't even start the car none of the above will work. []

Thanks again for all of the great advice and for sharing your own experiences of the mountain that Porsche vehicles seem to make out of this simple battery molehill.
I'm off to OPC tomorrow to pick up a new battery for the bargain price of £157, I shall certainly be clenching my teeth as they swipe my card :-(
