Electrical Problems ?

Hi, I noticed a few members on this forum complaining of flat batteries recently. My '97 993 has also suffered the same fate when I've tried to crank the engine after the car's been standing for about a week. The battery was supposedly new when I purchased the car back in May of this year. The battery is 63mah and is branded "Banner" - not a name I've heard off.

I've just checked the current drawn from the battery and it's about 0.05 amps - which I guess this is the alarm. I ensured all interior lights were off.

Does this current draw sound about right or is it too high which explains my flat battery. Is it more likely that this is a cheapo battery that's duff.

I know a lot of people were recommending the Bosch Silver 75mah batteries - I can pick one of these up at my local Costco for £50inc

Any advice appreciated.

I had that problem too, and even with a new (correct) battery, my 993 would not start.....

until i bought a Porsche "trickle charge", which i plug into the cigarette lighter when i dont use the car for say a week or so... [:mad:]

However, before i could use the trickle charger, Dave Lee at JZMachtech explained that on the 993 (mine is MY95 C2) you have to "alter" some wiring in the fusebox.... what that entails, i have NO clue, as i am not at all mechanically apt [&:]... but i am sure that Maurice or someone else more clued in than me will advise on that![8|]

Anyway, i no longer suffer with a flat battery !

Yes, it is a common problem.Especially, if you have tracker fitted as well.Either keep an eye on it and trickle charge it, using a conventional battery charger or as Jeff says get a battery management kit..........

I suppose something in the fuse box is "tweaked" so that the cigarette lighter socket is live all the time, i.e. so that the battery charger / maintainer actually connects to the battery! I'd also like to know how to do this in case it's DIYable.
 
Yep. When my beast was garaged and locked, it flattened its battery within two weeks during winter. I bought the Porsche battery conditioner (£50), the OPC modified the socket for free, and now no more troubles - although I no longer lock the car, just in case!
