Does anyone know why every time I turn my main beams or fog lights on the sterio cuts out and turns back on again. Rather annoying as my journey to work is all back road?

Steve, i've had this issue on occassion if i've been using the heater blower, stereo and had the lights on at the same time then flicked the lights from dip to main beam - i think it may be a charging or battery issue as it only seems to do it if there's a large drain on the battery.

Often the voltage regulator on the alternator goes. Mine did recently and for a few months before I got it changed the electrics did all sorts of strange things intermittently such as the volt meter jumping up to full scale deflection on the gauge and whatever electrics that were on at the time going haywire.

I've got a new battery last year and last night it worked ok, but I will try turning up the heat blowers tonight and see what happens? I will also check the battery terminals.

MOT today, fingers crossed.

I had something very similar whereby switching on something heavy caused the rev counter to stumble and/or the stereo to mute. Typically this was while flashing (in a nice way[:)]) at motorists or switching on the one-touch demist. Anyway, after checking everything, such as grounds, connections, tracing individual circuits, cleaning the fuse box connectors top-side and bottom-side, I ran out of ideas. Although the battery appeared to be charging correctly initially I found that if I managed to get a volt meter connected whilst it was in a "mood" then the battery was only receiving a little over 12V. I also measured the voltage at the instrument panel and saw 13.8V. So not a charging problem. I then focused on the positive battery cable that runs from the rear of the car to the starter. Where this cable enters the car through the box section of the sill there is a sharp metal edge that had eventually worn through most of the insulation. I re-insulated the cable and covered the sharp edge with some cheap door-edge protector. At the time I didn't think this would be the answer but my problems have subsequently vanished.

You can see the edge I describe above by removing the black plastic grill on the passenger side B-pillar and looking down. You should see the fairly chunky positive battery cable coming into the car. Could be worth checking.
