Electronic Dip Stick

Could any one shed any light on the electronic dip stick. When I picked up my 997 last week I parked the car to the rear on my house on a slightly downward angle. I checked my driveway with a spirit level and the bubble was half in and out of level. When I read the oil level at that point it shows the oil to be in the bottom segment (not the low level). When i park at work i park on an incline so the engine is further up from horizontal and i am getting a half way reading. So i though it must need some oil. Today i have topped up with 500ml in the slightly down position that i mentioned first. I have checked the gauge twice since and its never moved. So i thought it must not be able to provide an accurate reading in the slight downward position. There are two other locations on my drive which to me appear flat. The first position gave me a full reading and the second was reading half way???? I am quite confident i have not overfilled my engine with 500ml of oil but surely there is a possibility that this could occur? What do you guys do? Wait until it starts flashing or drops below the bottom segment before topping up? Anyway any thoughts or guidance would be greatly received, many thanks.

Thanks for the reply. The best thing might be the petrol station or in my garage where the base is flat after warning up the engine.

The oil level actually reads best when the car's level and cold, not warm.
Another 'housekeeping' point to bear in mind is that it's best to park the car 'nose down', as parking 'nose up' gathers the oil at the back of the sump (nearest the rear bumper) leaving the IMS and cam drive chains / gears 'dry' at the front of the engine when it's next started.

Thanks, nice tip. I have it parked with the nose slightly down at my home. It's reading half full on the dip stick now in that position.I have tried it cold and warm now in a few positions and it's reading half full, that's exactly where I thought it would be following the top up.

It's a Gen 1 car then? Gen 2 cars will only give you a reading when it's up to temperature. No IMS to worry about though![:)]

Yes it's a gen 1,2008. I was under the assumption that a modified IMS had been fitted by then and the issues with the IMS were resolved?
