Electrostatic clutch broken on Aircon Compressor

Hello everyone

Just had the car in to do a few jobs.

1. New radiator fan switch
2. Turbo Water pump replaced
3. New main Aircon lines and regass

Wey hey I thought aircon at last!!!! But NO!!!!
Unfortunately after fitting a new main section of pipework (is all aircon bits so expensive!!!!)so the system was leak proof it turned out the Clutch on the compressor is seized and therefore the coolant does not pump round the aircon system, so no cold air [:(]

Has anyone else had this problem with a seized compressor clutch (a new one from OPC is £300 just for the clutch!!) Or is that it either a new clutch fitted to the compressor or secondhand compressor???

Any thoughts on this gratefully received.

And any ideas on where to get a secondhand compressor would be helpfull

Thanks again

It might be worth contacting http://www.944online.com in Florida. I believe this is run by an ex-pat Brit, and if you look on his parts section there is a complete aircon kit for $495. Tony Foote was going to order one because of the excellent exchange rate at the moment. I don't know exactly whats in the kit but the picture sure looks like a compressor to me

Thanks Paul I will jump on there now

Any other ideas please leave me a message.

The bad taste of a rather larger bill than I thought has lessened slightly after the drive home. Been driving the Galaxy TDI all week and jumping back in the 44 nearly scared me again. Well worth any niggly problems [:D]

Cheers

I was indeed going try and get a group buy discount but I then got distracted by anti roll bars and wastegates. There was only one other guy interested at the time so that could be three of us now. The 944online kit is a new compressor plus pipes drier etc for 134A gas. It is good value but the shipping is expensive. I was quoted ovwer £400 for a refurbed compressor here though.

Hi Tony

Have been in touch with a guy in the states who can send me a new clutch for the compressor for £121 posted to my door. As the rest of the compressor is in good condition it seems the cheapest option at the moment. Especially after having just had the main aircon pipe replaced at a cost of £175 and 4 hours labour to change it [:(] on top of the parts price!!! OUCH

Not sure if the clutch is a complicated thing to do or if it will have to go back to TWG in Peterborough???

Need to save my pennies as I need to refurb the 968 Cup 2's I have just bought and put new tyres on each corner. So much for not spending much on this car.

Still worth it for the smike everytime I drive it[:)]

Cheers

Oh

Forgot to mention that Gantspeed wanted £370 plus the dreaded VAT for the same clutch for the aircon compressor I can purchase from the states.

What a crazy world we live in

Cheers

Glad you can sort it relatively cheaply and yes crazy world when we can buy stuff made in Germany much cheaper from half way around the world.
