Elton's 996

A celebrity car is only worth more if you really do want to park your bum in the same place they did.

Kylie, perhaps.

Elton, no thanks [;)]

Having Elton on the Log book would make me want it for a better price, as (mdowning) mentioned if it was maybe kylie then it would be worth a few more quid?

I'm with you both on this one. I am struggling to think of whose name in a log book would make me pay more than the car is worth, and why I would want to do that. It would only be worth it if it would make the car clearly more valuable and saleable. Obviously Elton doesn't do that.

Kylie? Perhaps.
Jay Kay? Possibly - at least he's a petrolhead.
Nick Mason? Ditto
The Pope? Absolutely - you could retire if you had his name on the V5.

Any offers for whose name would devalue a car most?
Elton John? Obviously.
George Galloway? A dead cert.
Meatloaf? The driver's seat would be knackered.

I think Oliver is right, and the only reason it's on eBay is to part a fool with his cash.

A famous racing driver. If he clearly owned and used the car for a decent period of time, and the car was not then littered with a succession of nobodies.

Perhaps, John Watson's 2.7RS, Richard Burns' GT3, Ayrton Senna's 3.2 Carrera (in which he was famously caught speeding on the M3), Niki Lauda's 3.3 turbo etc.

True. Some great names and desirable cars, but I think I would still go for a non-celeb car if I was ever in the market for one of these cars and there was a choice. After all, I'd get as much pleasure from driving one of these wonderful machines no matter who the former owner was.

I know someone who has a 360 ferrari and the first and last owner was Jenson Button, of cause his now ex Mrs use to be drivien around in it which is as good as if not better than Kylie. However this car was low miles with all the toys and the value was not added to.

I am thinking about selling my car on ebay as an alternative to the paltry sums the dealers are offering me. Is ebay really that bad?

I don't think eBay would be the right place to sell it unless you want to sell quickly and give it away. I did a search of completed listings for 'porsche carrera' and it showed dozens of cars which had no bids, or the reserve wasn't met. See here

Richard, you are right: I can't find a single auction that realised either the reserve or a reasonable market price. I think I'll save my listing fee.

Because it has such a huge audience, Ebay is now widely used to promote a car that is for sale, with no expectation that it will actually sell there.

You could put your car on with a high reserve and qualify it with the right to withdraw as it is being advertised elsewhere.

Oliver, you mean as a sign post to where I am really selling it? Nice idea, but I am going to give it a miss, I think. Part of me doesn't want to distort the concept of ebay in this way, part of me doesn't want to waste the listing fee.

By the way, if anyone does want to buy it, please see AutoTrader!

David Beckham's 1996 BMW M3 with 70k on the clock sold for £90k recently!!! That's 90 grand![][][] Fools. Money. etc
