Emergency engine compartment release

I have spotted an emergency engine compartment release on my 996 C4 MY2003.

It's just a wire pull with a ring on the end, attached to the release mechanism, similar to the fuel cap emergency release.

My question is where should the ring end of this wire be located so that it can be used as intended?

I discovered it taped underneath the near-side rear light cluster, but since you can only remove the light cluster once the engine compartment lid is open, that seems a bit of a useless place to put it.

Anybody now the correct location?

Thanks

Simon

That's the correct place. You are supposed to peel back the wheel arch liner, and reach in with your hand. No easy, but then again if it was too easy.......

I have seen some people extend the cable, and tuck it behind the side repeater.

Thanks Richard didn't know that. I suppose my next question is; can the liner be moved etc. while the wheel is still on? Bearing in mind that 997's don't have a jack etc. as standard.

You have to pry out the plastic rivets in the wheel arch to pull back the liner far enough.to get your hand in It can be done with the wheel on - easier if you put it on full lock. If you have electric releases, it is easier to pull the terminal out in the fuse panel, and connect a battery to give power to pop the front lid. (If the battery has gone flat, that is).

I dropped mine down the front of the bumper when I removed it to clean the rads, the loop on the end is now sat between the lower edge of the bumper and one of the fixing screws. It isn't seen and doesn't hang down but is easy to get to if needed.
