Took the left rear light off today to dry out the internal condensation and found there's a cable behind the light assembly to open the engine cover. Presumably, if the electric release fails, it's judged cheaper to smash your way in through the light assembly than take an angle grinder to the engine cover. But, knowing Porsche part prices, not that much cheaper.

I think it might be accessible another way, like the front compartment release - and you are not supposed to tell people!

I was told by a mechanic how to get to it.
I can see some one now, making off up the road with a 996 engine on a shopping trolley.... look good in a Saxo. Do they still do the Saxo Owner Manual in comic form.... no danger that they can read any of this then...
