Emission Control Warning Light

Hi Guys,

I have a 2007 3.2 Boxster S 987 which I bought new. Recently the Emission Control Warning Light (Check Engine) came on. The car seems to run perfectly even with the light on but I took it into a Porsche specialist whom I have used before to check it out. He reset the system but the light came on again 2 days later. I took it back & on further investigation I was told that faults were recorded for fuel evap canister purge solinoid & that the purge solinoid would need to be replaced. A week later the part came at a cost of €53 & it cost an additional €200 to fit it! I took the car away & now 2 days later the light has come on again.
Just wondering has anyone come across anything like this before.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Paul.

Paul, just to let you know there's another [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=604944]thread[/link] running on this topic. I'm assuming when you say on it's on continuously and not flashing. As long as the CEL isn't flashing, you should be able to drive it without doing any damage. My view is that if it seems to be running OK with no obvious loss of power or increased fuel consumption, just run it for 2-3 days and see if the CEL goes out on its own. Make sure you run it for at least 15 miles so the engine reaches its correct operating temperature. This happened to me two weeks ago. If it stays on for more than a week then I would get an OPC to check the fault codes and see what they suggest. I've concluded that Boxsters seem to suffer from more than their fair share of CEL on incidents. Perhaps this is due to cars not being driven every day. My Boxster's CEL has come on at stayed on for a brief period at least once every year for the last four years. I had 2 iffy coil packs replaced by an OPC last year and 2 more the year previously as these were suspected to be cause of lumpy start ups which seemed to trigger the check light on condition.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I saw the other thread when I was searching last night. The light is staying on not flashing. The specialist I take the car to did mention replacing the cats if the purge solinoid didn't solve the problem. This could run into €1,000's..... So I think I'll get a second opinion before I go down that road. I've driven the car for the last 2 days 20 miles each way into work & back & no sign of the light going off. I'll give it until next week & if it hasn't gone off I'll bring it to the Porsche service centre. Unfortunately I am based in Cork in Southern Ireland & the closest official Porsche service centre is in Dublin 150 miles away. The closest official sales agent is Belfast 300 miles away.... The joys of living in Ireland!!

There seem to be a large number of potential causes for the CEL light. Most stem form the self check system on the emissions. If you do a search on line for bosch motronic 7.8.4 ( the same generic unit used in the boxster) you will find a tech article from citroen which lists the generic parameters and fault codes for the system .
