emission warning light

Can anyone help? Car is a '98 Carrera, owned about a month with no problems. It has been in the garage for 2 weeks due to the rubbish weather, although I did start it up last weekend. I got in it today to go for a spin and the yellow emission light came on. The engine sounds like it is firing on 5 cylinders and tickover is erratic. I have read previous posts about this issue so I am going to charge the battery now, but can anyone suggest anything else?

Thanks

Five cylinders? Souns like it could be a coil pack to me, but you really need to get a diagnostic check done to see what the fault codes are.

This could be the dreaded valve lift system. If you get the code checked and it comes back with the code for a misfire on cylinder six ,then sadly it almost certainly is the problem.
I am making a longer post about this on the site.
Hope I am wrong!

Good advice here, your best getting it diagnosed properly, I had an emmisions light on and I pissed about changing plugs then coil packs then cleaning inlet chamber (forgot what it is called here) , then when I had it serviced they diagnosed it to be a stuck solenoid on the vario timing, part £95 but ended up £480 + vat fitted, lifes a bitch but it's not a Mondeo !

Was that £480 at an OPC, or indy?
I have had a similar intermittent problem, coil packs changed (twice), and plugs changed..

Further to my post above, I can advise that it was the coil pack at fault should anyone have a similar problem. I can't tell you how much it cost as the work was done by the dealer that I bought the car from under warranty.
Thanks to all for your replies.
