Engaging Gears

Morning All.

Last night the gearbox was having a little difficulty in engaging first/second and this morning the car for the first 10 minutes whilst warming up would not engage reverse/first , eventually the car engaged first and the 20 minute journey into work, the gearbox was notchy but loosing up as the journey went on.

Is this just down to the cold weather ?
Does the gearbox need to be properly warmed up before being engaged
New clutch 500 miles ago , could that be part of the problem ?
Or have I got a potential problem that needs addressing ?

Cheers for any replies

This might be an oversimplification and you've probably tried this - but I find if Baby's being a bit of a cow, I back-off the clutch a little and I can get it into 1st/2nd no problem. Sometimes the gearbox can be a bit notchy in 1st/2nd - but she's done 110,000 miles (I love driving her) so the syncro-mesh on these (heavily used/abused) gears may be getting a bit tired. IMHO it is unlikely the new clutch is at fault but perhaps the cable has stretched.

Thanks Matthew and Maurice as usual [8D] your advice to a novice is very much appreciated , the car is going in to RPM next week for a few minor niggles so I will ask them re cylinder etc when the clutch was done by them , re the gearbox oil having only had the car a month its something I had already thought of replacing so I will get that done at the time

Cheers

Have you checked that your clutch pedal is fully extending once unloaded? When I bought my C2 last year, the onset of cold weather saw me in the same position re. reverse gear. What I had not noticed was that the clutch pedal was hanging slightly while cold, and restricting gear selection on start-up. (It is a slave cylinder problem at root, nothing to do with the clutch itself). This was quite a worry for a first time 993 (and Porsche for that matter) buyer as you can imagine, but a good pull on the pedal restored function and the problem has since been addressed. A quick and cheap fix if this is the same problem.

Hi Jonathan , that doesn't appear to be the problem with mine, car has gone into RPM for the fault to be diagnoised and for the fault to be sorted .. Ill post on the outcome

Morning all , Im missing the 993 ( been in at RPM for a week now ) and looks like another week with the BMW Estate ( which Im grateful to the guys at GMund for the use of a car ) .. the problems relating to the gearbox are that the slave cylinder has gone ( common problem ? ) and a new one is on back order ( warranty claim [;)] ) and should be their by some time next week , bit of a blow as Im going away next week to see a bunch of mates and smokin the 993 was part of the deal [:D] but hopefully the car will be ready.

They are sorting out all the niggles , Air Con being regassed , MPG/Misfire seems down to needing new distributor/rotors which is not under warranty but Andy is sorting , cannot argue with that for service . Interior Light sorted but the wingmirror motor has gone £160 but I carnt stand things that dont work , few other bits and bobs being put right , new gearbox oil as a precaution etc .

Looking forward to getting the car back , strange only had the car for a month but there is a small attachment starting already [;)]

The slave cylinder does come up quite often as a problem item.

Does anyone know whether the fluid for the cylinder is an item for change at service time? I can't find it mentioned anywhere.
