Engine and gearbox mounts

My PDK R is due some new engine and transmission mounts. RSS seem to be the deal for engine, but has anyone have alternative suggestions for the gearbox please?
 
Do the Cayman engine and gearbox mounts have a limited lifespan?

When my exhaust parted company with the catalyst a few months ago (the three studs and triangular gasket) I asked the garage to check the engine/gearbox mounts and they said they didn't need changing which leads me to ask: How can you tell that they need changing?, Does it require engine and gearbox removal to change them?

 
One of mine required replacement and it was not an engine out job.

My local Centre spotted something whilst it was in for a safety check post track day, I was not aware of any issue prior to that.

 
no idea how you have managed to ruin the engine/gearbox mounts on such a young car.

I have a Function 1st gap plugger in mine,(I went yellow) and it's a good press in fit.

I would stay oem for gearbox mounts as the noise can be bad and fit a function 1st part in the engine mount, although new Porsche mounts now might be more solid I have seen with no gap in them.

maybe the gap wore them out under load ! and they changed the design.

The car has now done 52000 miles and when used in anger and where the ambient temperatures are high (e.g. Alps in summer) the transmission feels loose and clunky. Almost like having an insecure bag of cement in the boot. Get back to normal driving in the UK and there is nothing that the OPC can find. So now the car is out of warranty and I have nothing to lose, I thought I would see if a few reversible modifications could improve things. RSS do stiffer transmission mounts which have been recommended as not making the NVH too bad. I have not found anything similar for the front engine mount. The inserts Mr D suggests may fit the bill instead, so I will have a look at those. A bit of a winter project.

I have a set of the Grey Function 1st engine mount stiffeners which I used in my CR for a while. when I first fitted them I found they made the car feel and sound a lot sharper and sportier and when I took them out it felt quite mild. I have no plans to re fit them as I have retired the R from most track days now as I have a Boxster race car so if you're interested you can have them for 50 quid, if not no probs, they're not eating anything ;)

[/quote] Thanks for the offer Andy. Do you have an insert for the central mount at the front of the engine, or are yours for the side transmission mounts?

One thing I have found is the confusion caused by the Cayman transmission mounts being engine mounts on the 911.

 
That's because the engine is not in the same place as a 911 ;-)

so the gearbox is behind the engine on a Cayman, and in front of the engine on a 911 not really a confusion.

 
That's true D....the two hydro-mounts still support the engine and the single block rubber mount supports the gearbox. The whole engine/transmission assembly (including the mounts) is just rotated 180 degrees.

I'm not sure what John's talking about here but an engine mount is an engine mount and a gearbox mount is a gearbox mount..!
