Hi all.

I have a 2000 996 C2.

I have never noticed the engine bay fan work and in this heat the temperature gauge is going a little higher than normal in traffic.
The engine bay is very very hot.
I have changed the temp sensor in the engine bay but still the fan does not work.

Can someone please advise the operation of this fan?
is indeed my next step to put some power directly to the fan to see if it works?

thanks.

Hi donp38

I had the same issue with my 2001 996 C2 Cab and thought I was hauling dead weight but I attended an OPC clinic where they plugged the car into the laptop and actually fired it up. It buzzed away and cleared out the cobwebs but has not worked since. I asked the technician why it did not start at lower temperatures and he said it was more like a safety valve and that if the engine bay does get too hot it will work. Like you I would prefer it to start at lower temperatures.

Regards

Dodgy

The engine compartment fan should cut in when the engine bay reaches 60°C, which it seldom does. (see http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=330170 for operating conditions).

As Dodgy says, the fan can be activated with a Porsche tester. I'm not sure of the sensor output details, so I'm reluctant to suggest bridging the terminals. Maybe pull the sensor out of its clip and gently blow some hot air on it from a heat gun? (Not sure a hair dyer would get hot enough.)

Hello,

I thought the relay for this is under the rear parcel shelf?.

Number 8?

Decking it would make the fan switch on or is it more a case of you want to test the sensor?

I think you should as this would tell you the fan works at least as your original comment.
