Engine bay squeak

Hi
I'm getting a squeak from the front of the engine bay. It only appears a couple of minutes after the car has been started and then goes away again after a couple of minutes. Upon further investigation (I was having the AC gassed up) the squeak appears every time the engine is under load ie AC on, cabin fan at high speed, etc. So my theory is that the squeak is coming from the alternator. It is very high pitch but is not continuous, more of a squeak, squeak, squeak etc.
Is my theory correct, do I need a reecon alternator and if so what's a common price?
Thanks
John

I would say you are definitely correct in that it's the alternator belt, especially if its worse under electrical load.

There is an adjuster underneath the car and the belt itself is not much to replace.

Hi
Thanks for ther replies. However it doesn't sound like a belt - more of a bearing squeak and so I am thinking replecment alternator. Has anyone ever repaired one or is it not worth the hassle. Any idea what a typical price would be for a recon alternator?

If it really is a squeaky bearing in the alternator (and not a belt - which would be my top suspect), why not try applying a spot of oil to the ends of the main shaft?

Replacing a whole alternator just because it squaks once in a while seems a bit OTT, to be honest. (It's this sort of thing that gives Porsches the reputation of being expensive to run!)

Oli.

belts dont always sqeeeeeeeel , most of the time its a sqeak ...squeak ....squeak etc etc . ive never even heard of an alternator sqeaking ?!? change the belt as it might be glazed now and tension the new one properly :) might be aswell to wipe the pulleys it runs on with a degreasing solvent too
