Engine cleaning advice

Any tips of what to do or what not to do when cleaning the engine?
My 964 has suffered from an over fill of oil by the previous owner and also from some of the usual 964 minor oil leaks that have accumulated over the years. The car has its undertrays fitted and I was just after some advice as to how to go about cleaning the engine and ancillaries.
I've used Truck-Wash on other cars, which is a strong water soluble detergent, this when left for a short while, especially on a warmish engine loosens most oil and then a blast with a cold feed power-washer usually does a fine job.
Should I do the same with the Porsche engine, are there areas to avoid getting wet? Should I do it with the engine running? Any help and suggestions much appreciated.

Truck wash is probalby ok, but a bit harsh. I use Autoglym road and tar, or TFR, snow foam, then power wash down with the Karcher, then aerospace 303 as a finsih, and then wipe off.

Be very careful using a pressure washer on the engine bay, espec around the elecs!!

I've used Autoglym Tyre and Rubber dressing on the plastic bits. WD40 also does a good job!!
