Engine Coolant.....

Hi everyone,

The engine coolant warning light comes on and off although the temp needle is in the centre at 90... I thought I should check the level and it looks like it was way way below minimum.. I may well have a leak, but I would like in the first instance to top up the level and see....

So my question is what do I buy to top it up? The fluid looks red or orange ...

Never had that problem with my 993.... [:)][:)][:)]

Thank you kindly!

Just use water in an emergency (pref distilled), otherwise purchase it from your Porsche Centre as it is special long-life solution.

Clive.

It's not that special Clive - thee are others that will suffice and meet the identical specification.

ORIGINAL: Lancerlot

Sure, but for a new owner it's better to get it from a trusted source. [;)]

JP - the Porsche coolant doesn't dry up, so it should be fairly easy to identify any leak. The front radiators are vulnerable in 997's, so check around the front PU and underneath for any indication of dampness.

Many of us fit mesh to front air vents to avoid flying objects and the build up of debris around the backs of the rads. as this can cause corrosion.

Clive.

Guys... what can I say!!

Thank you so much for the prompt reply, I will add water for now and get it seen to asap.
Many thanks once again! JP

Try replacing the cap as a 1st option if you haven't any visible coolant below the car as these seem to leak.....

hth

I have filled up the reservoir with water.... I need to use the car Sunday, to take my daughter back to Univ... That is a fair round trip....

I hope the car doesn't blow up!!!

Your daughter must travel light, there is no chance of getting my sons uni stuff over Christmas in the 997 (much to his disgust) , especially as the return trip seems to have grown by 10 crates of beer [8|] i am assured its money saving by buying direct from the brewery with his mates:ROFLMAO: At this rate I'm going to need a Transit when he comes out of Halls and goes into rented house!

Well i think i may not take the 997, there is a pool of water underneath the reservoir on the garage floor... So that's that!

Next trip will be down to PARR in Crawley... doh!

Hi JP,

I am assuming you have not run the car and since topping up the level has dropped.

If you have run it, the level dropping slightly with water appearing underneath would be normal.

However, if it is not water but coolant on the floor, you clearly have a leak. Clear water on the floor is usually just condensation released from the aircon system.

Regards

Clive.

Clive,

Thank you for that.

What I did was to fill it with water and then turn the engine over for a minute or so to let the water and coolant mix. But I have not taken the car out. There is a lot of water underneath the engine/passenger-side rear wheel.... and it is slightly coloured (yellowish)... So I am taking that to be a leak.

It is a nuisance and expense which I could do without.... still... got to keep that in context!

I will let Parr take a look at it...
