Engine cover adjustment

Guys, Can someone help me with hopefully a simple question. Recently when I pull the cable to release the engine cover, the lock releases but doesn't lift sufficiently to allow me to open it (I hope that makes sense). When I let go of the handle and make my way to the back of the car the lid has locked. If I get someone to pull the release while I stand at the back I can lift it as normal. How do I make adjustments? Cheers Paul

I think it could be one (or both) of two adjustments.

First is the cable itself which may have stretched or slipped. If you look where it attaches to the engine cover release you'll see the cable passes through a screw and lock nut arrangement - it's a simple matter of loosening this off and pulling the cable with a pair of pliers to remove any slack and then re-tightening the screw and lock nut. Also make sure that the cable and mechanism are well greased.

Second is the part of the mechanism attached to the cover; this has a plunger which latches onto the catch below when the lid is closed and a strong spring to push the plunger and lid up free of the catch when the release is pulled. Check that this spring is functioning correctly and well greased.

Hope this is of some help.

Paul one of the other problems you may have is the pistons that lift the lid up, you may find one or both are on the way out. Easy job to replace

Cheers for the advice guys. I'll have a look the weekend and let you know how I got on... Paul
