Engine Dying

Guest

Ken and Guys,

Small problem with my 964 C4! Sometimes when I pull up at junctions and depress the clutch, engine revs drop so low that the car stalls. Upon restarting engine will not idle and dies agian - Try this two or three times and keep revs up and then seems OK. We (OK Tony Greatorex) has tried a different Idle Valve (?) but problem still occurs (although not as much).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Unless someone has a specific solution, then I would check that it is not due not enough fuel, air or spark.
Check the spark plugs, leads, battery, fuel filter, throttle butterfly.
If everything else is OK, you are steered towards the engine management. There is little you can do to tweak this and need some external help.

Terry,

Has the idle micro switch been looked at? If this engages properly it tells the DME to enter idle state. I would look here first, its the small black 1/2 square with a very small red pimple for the switch, it should click when the accelerator is in the resting position.

Have you tried a DME reset? Is the battery voltage ok? less than 12v is starting to run into idle problems. Oil on the airflow meter? lots of areas to look at, sorry I couldn' t be more specific.

Terry,

There is a whole mountain of possible reasons for this problem. It seems to me it' s a miracle that 964s idle at all!

If you haven' t already, do a search at Smartgroups, or Rennlist. Look under idle.

Mine did exactly this due to a tired set of contacts on the air-metering flap, but there are so many potential causes...

Possibly the best way of finding this problem is to take you car to a Porsche Specialist who has a Bosch Hammer.

As John suggests, there is a lot of information for you to read through. on www.smartgroups.com/groups/964porsche
Also we have our 964 Tehnical Advisers:- Graig and Peter of GT One Chertsey 01932 569911

Hope you can quickly get the problem sorted.
Best Wishes
Ken
