Engine Fan

Just recieved my 993 C2 Cab back from my local OPC after having the engine rebuilt following my request to repair an oil leak and replace clutch while they were at it. Anyway, having done 300 miles since the engine cooling fan now starts as soon as I turn on the ignition, even though the engine is stone cold. I'm loathed to take it back to the OPC - long story but never again! Anybody know if it's an easy problem to solve ?

there's a temp sensor 'probe' that on our car meant the fan went on running well after the ignition ws turned off.

Replacing this was the cure on our Cab,
I bought it from GermanSwedish or Euro car parts - forgotten which, £20 max I think, and approx. 2 mins to fit. [:)]

It's a short tube, with wires runing to one end, you slot it in - twist to lock it in place.
fits into the wide pipe air ducting to the fan, left handside of the engine bay - facing you as you look in.

before the part arrived I just disconencted the wires that run tot he probe - but that's a bit of a pain, as the plug part was deepish on the left hand side / flank of the engine.

Guessing as there was no fan problem when it was disconnected, then the fault is likely to be with your probe, not the wires running to it?? but I'm making a non-mechanic guess![8D]

Sorry can't be more technical,
If no one else jumps in I'll take a photo .

OK, I'm no mechanic either so your description suits me fine :)

I'll have a look this weekend ( when I next get back to her) and follow your guide.
Many thanks.....

The engine bay fan is linked to the climate control system. If you switch the ignition on and the heating to the minimum setting the fan should not come on. If you move the temp to anything above zero the fan should come on gently. If it's coming on full blast, or coming on when the temp is at zero then you need to replace the temp probe. It's also advisable to replace the fan resistor at the same time as this too can cause erratic fan behavior.

Part Number for the temp probe is 964.659.120.00 Porsche price £30+vat and the Resistor is Part Number is 964.616.550.02 £20.91+vat

Here's a pic showing the location of the temp probe in front and the resistor down the side of the air tube.

Great stuff - thanks for your help & time chaps. I'll order up the parts and let you know how it goes.
