Engine hiccups under constant throttle

Good evening everybody

Went to and back from Germany this weekend (to a 924/44/68 meet with about 100 cars [:)]) and noticed on the way back that my old S2 would feel like misfiring under constant throttle. No problem under accel/deceleration.
Problem with fuel delivery (dirty injector, FPR)?
Poor fuel quality?
Lambda probe on its way out?

Though it happened "only" three or four times in 900 miles, she had never done that before. For what it's worth the last 100 miles were trouble free.

Thanks for your input

When did you last change the HT leads/plugs?

Oli.

ETA: I notice you chose the superior of your two wagons for such a prestigious trip!

I never replaced them but yes, as they have been on the car at least since I bought it 65k miles ago they may well be cooked as well.

Yes, it's good to have a car you can rely on and is cheap to run when the other one is on stands yet kicking hard your wallet. From Paris to Strasbourg it returned a staggering 30mpg then averaged 120mph in one hour on the way to Stuttgart. I said it before but I'll say it again : the S2 is a better all rounder than the turbo and I'm well chuffed with mine!! How about some gratuitous pics [:)]

Thanks for the plug on the... plugs!

Looks like a very nice one.

120miles in an hour is going some. Well done.

FWIW, I've seen 32mpg on a tankful on a long run. That was while giving it some beans in scotland a couple of years ago, on 95ron petrol (higher octane stuff improves fuel economy by around 10% in my experience). It's stop-start traffic, in cities, which really spoils the economy on the S2.

Keep us posted on the problem and the solution.

Lovely clean car you have there Thom. Keep us posted, as my own S2 displays similar symptoms, although I have always put it down to the distributor cap as I've never replaced it and I doubt others have either.

Meanwhile, off topic, where is your clutch fluid reservoir? I was going to use your engine bay shot to demonstrate but it's not visible on the RHS where I'd expect it for a LHD car.

Cheers

James

James, thanks but it's not as clean as the pictures suggest (I always show pictures of left side as the right side was repainted at some point before I bought it and it's not perfect [;)]).
There is no clutch reservoir on LHD cars, the clutch uses the brake fluid reservoir.

I think I have a used set of relatively fresh HT leads that came with the 968 engine I have used for my 3.0 8V build ; I will try to check if they are fresher than the ones currently on the car. I replaced the distributor cap & rotor a couple of years ago but I suppose they are worth checking as well.

Yes Nick, it's an early SciVision MAF (with the separate box). It's plug & play and it requires no tuning.
I talked to its designer/builder at the meet and we are both pleased I haven't had any trouble with it yet. Did 25k km with it so far.

Ahhhhhh, 25k on the MAF

I wonder if if it's worth spraying the wire with one of those MAF cleaning sprays? Maybe some crud has deposited on the wire?

Yes it could be a faulty MAF sensor - cars from the VW group had an awful lot of issues with this MAF sensor - but I suppose I will have to wait until the problem occurs often enough to get a dig at it.
