ENGINE HOLDING ADAPTER - Special Tool P201

Does anyone have, or know of anyone who has, Porsche special tool P201 - engine holding adapter, that they would be willing to lend me for a minimum period of 9 days up to a maximum of 4 weeks?

I am preparing to rebuild the top end on my 89 3.2 Carrera. I am aiming at a budget of around £1.5k to £2k for parts and the machine shop labour for new guide fitment, and the £260 for this tool puts a significant dent in the budget. I am willing to pay a reasonable hire rate, as I also would be for use over a similar period of any of the other special tools necessary for the rebuild, however as these are generally of the order of £20 - £30 these aren't quite such a problem.

If anyone knows of hire services that might be able to help, or tool libraries etc, please can you let me know.

Whilst on the subject of rebuilds, does anyone have any 'top tips' that might ease the surgery? I have Bently's manual and Wayne Dempsey's impressive 'how to rebuild and modify Porsche 911 engines'. My aim is not really to save a great deal but to gain the benefits of greater understanding of my beloved 3.2's workings, take the opportunity to give the bay, ancilliaries and engine a good clean and hopefully with the labour costs saved invest in a nice perfomance exhaust system and perhaps chip/filter.

Incedentally, if anyone is considering doing the same and wants to lend me a hand to drop the motor out one weekend around the beginning of July before attempting the same on theirs I would be glad of the help, and happy to reciprocate. I live on the Kent/Surrey Border. Likewise if there is someone out there who is considering a rebuild and perhaps wants to share the costs of the special tools let me know.

Please forgive me if this post appears twice, or does not conform to the group etiquette, this is my first post to a forum of any type.

I would gladly come and lend a hand if i lived a bit closer, but Manchaster is to far away. I would'nt be much help as i have basic to average machanical skills, because what you are attempting to do this year, i am hopefully going to attempt next winter.

Thanks for the offer, but as you say - a bit far.

I'll let you know anything I think might be useful for when you come to do yours (assuming I remember) later in the year

Graphite I've just had the engine out of my SC and like you I had to borrow the engine mount. All I can suggest is you contact your register Sec' and ask him/her to put a piece in the relevant register article detailing your request or do what Idid and ring around Porsche garages to see if anyone has a spare to lend you, many garage owners are PCGB mebers and true enthusiasts. . I aim to get into the whole subject of specialist tools as the year goes by with the club (wish me luck) and hopefully things like this can be kept around the country by responsible members and records kept of who had what last. If you need a hand I live in Enfield but if I can manage I will drop by. Perhaps a few of us could arrange to come over, I'm sure there are a few members who would love to see a 3.2 in bits. From my experiences you will need two, preferably three strong people and a good jack to get the engine out and onto the stand. Email if you like and I'll send you my phone no.
