Engine hunts with oil cap off

I changed the oil in my 944 for the first time today. And whilst I was warming the oil up by running the engine I started doing some checks. I opened the oil filler cap and the engine RPM dropped and the engine stumbled until the cap was replaced. Same thing happened with the dipstick removed.

Im guessing a breather is blocked or something? Any advice welcome :)

Oh 1984 2.5 lux

That would be where i would check too , 944's can have issues with the filler neck filter getting blocked but it's a bitch to get off and clean. Now IIRC Jon Mitchel advised that you can use deisel to clean this by pouring some down the central hole which means taking of the inlet manifold. You have to do this to take off the filler pipe anyway so perhaps best to do that and clean it out.
BTW for you turbo guys the breathing system on our cars struggles after you reach 350BHP , you can improve it a little by drilling the central hole a little bigger thus reducing crank pressure , oil leaks and smoke from the exhaust.

Ahh ok cool. I have the day off tomorrow so maybe thats what I will do then :) I'll see how I get on, I have rakes of brake cleaner so that will probably do the same job as the diesel :)

Cheers
