Engine Issue

Recently i was driving my 99 2.5 Boxster and hit about 5250rpm and lost power(but idled), pulled over and restarted ok. Shortly afer the Engine Check light Flashed for a few moments then stayed illuminated. At some point, next day, i disconnected the battery and reconnected shortly after. Engine Check light now out and she seems ok. This has happened before. Obviously something is not quite right. Thoughts please.
I've changed the plugs and coil packs, in last 4 months, k&n filter also installed. Cleaned the MAF. All at toughly the same time. Alternator also repaired recently.

Thanks

Sounds very similar to a problem I had with my MY2000 2.7 post a service. It turned out to be the MAF which once replaced cured the problem completely. Not sure whether it was contamination of the sensor or failure. One thing that may have had an influence was that a K and N filter was installed, and service may have cleaned and re-oiled this resulting in contamination? Anybody else know if this is a known problem?

Hi there,
I seem to recall other people on here having problems with K&N filters after being serviced/fitted.
I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along shortly.

Interesting thoughts re the K&N. I've used them on other vehicles without issue.

Thanks for the replies so far.

i put a k&n in mine lasted 10 miles car wasnt running right so replaced it with paper one and cleaned the maf all good now

Very much sounds like the MAF, but this could be contamination from the non stock air filter, suggest you return the air cleaner to standard as apart from increased induction sound there are no advantages.
Oiled air filters are pretty shitty things, the oil contaminates the maf plus as the oil attracts dirt the filter clogs up rather quickly and the air flow slowly restricts which forces the car to back off on on its fueling ratio - which in turn reduces efficiency and power.

The MAF is a common issue and there are a number of different part numbers for the different models so be sure to get the right one.
When the MAF is on its way out you can experience a few different scenarios - common ones are - irregular running, hesitation under acceleration - pulls well then appears to back of a little then power returns - or power decreases and pulls sluggish the higher up the rev range you go, Misfire, CEL.

You can of course quite easilly identify or confirm a MAF issue by simply unplugging the electrical connection to it, once disconected and engine started the DME will recognise this and opperate its limited operation strategy and aproximate fuel/air ratios, in effect this bypasses the maf input and all runs well - of course the emmisions are a bit out and wouldnt pass an MOT test but the LOS is much better than a faulty maf signal input, disconected the hesitation or sluggishness or misfire will dissapear.

the airflow of a boxster is different to most cars, it sucks more into the car, if you want a aftermarket filter go for pipe cross as it isn't oiled and wont effect the maf. what had happened to your car is that it went into safety mode to protect the engine, it it isnt the maf get it on a machine as it could be a number of problems. like for example was one of the four the lambda sensor's which had failed

This is a common problem with VAG cars - MAF failures due to aftermarket panel filters being installed which are of the 'oiled' variety.
