Engine Issues

Well, just got my car back from Reading OPC for a minor service.............

First thoughts are they charged me £100 for oil, not sure when they started doing oil changes in a minor service and had I known I would have gone to Costco but that is a conversation for Monday but it appears that is not all I have to worry about :-(

1) The start motor turns over slowly, this could be the battery and as it is 10 years old not to surprising and as I use a trickle charger it could be hiding a problem with the battery. So new battery then, not a biggy.

2) I have misfires at low revs on bank 1 (all cylinders 1,2 and 3) which means it is lumpy at tick over, you know when stopped at traffic lights, etc and makes it tricky to crawl slowly when in a queue. Now this is more worrying especially as I changed the plugs and coil packs only last year.

3) I get a fault code meaning camshaft adjustment on bank 1.

4) Assuming they checked my coolant levels during the service, it is now below the Min level 30 miles later.

5) oh and a level 4 out of 5 RMS/IMS leak but I know about that and was waiting for the clutch to go before biting that bullet.

Now all together this seems to take me a dark place OR it could be 3 completely separate issues, of leaking coolant bottle, dodgy electrics to bank 1 and a corroded solenoid resulting in the lumpy idle. Am I clutching at straws ????

Anyone else had camshaft adjustment and what that could entail?

Just felt like sharing, probably off to GT1 as a first port of call.

Cheers

I think you are correct about the battery.

Misfires on one complete bank, and a lumpy idle, are classic signs of a problem Variocam solenoid or coil. What ware the actual code numbers you got? If it is a Porsche tester you are using, try starting the engine and go to Drive Links in the DME module. You should be able to activate the Variocam solenoid on bank 1. If the idle speed doesn't change, then the solenoid isn't working.

Any signs of coolant dripping under the car?

An oil change is part of a minor service, but no filter change. (Which is nonsense). It is the Annual service (for low mileage) which doesn't have an oil change included.

Hi Richard,

Cool, that makes me feel a bit better. Don't know about the fault code as it was reported as part of the service.

I was hoping for a faulty solenoid. I left tissues out under the coolant container at the rear of the car but no drips this morning, any other typical leak spots to check ?

Assuming you aren't getting clouds of water vapour from the exhaust, and there isn't any water in the oil, it is likely to be a leak somewhere. Front radiators perhaps?

You could also check the coolant tank cap. Older variants of cap can blow off at too low a pressure. The water collects in the tray at the top of the tank, and drains down a rubber tube to the side of the engine compartment and onto the ground.

Was the car fine on all the early issues when it went in?

You must specify oil change or not; most garages assume you want an oil change and put some rubbish generic 10W-40
in.( and charge a fortune for it).

When putting a car in for a service i provide a sheet of what i want to be done down to the last detail.

But then i'm an old cynic!

To be fair, it has been lumpy at idle for a while and I knew about the RMS but was waiting for my clutch to go and get it all done at the same time.

I checked my invoice and my last minor did not include a oil change, maybe that is what I shoudl be questioning.

I have borrowed a coolant pressure test system, so will know more on Tuesday.

Still a bit baffled by what 'camshaft adjustment' entails?

Minor maintenance SHOULD include an oil change. Schedules here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=230826

The Variocam solenoid adjusts the camshaft timing. If the Variocam solenoid isn't working it will give a P1341 'Camshaft Adjustment, Bank*' fault code.

Cool, feeling a little more comfortable that this is a combination of issues and not an oval cylinder issue.

Can anyone recommend a diagnostic for home use?

Cheers all

Stu,

just send you and email if you need access to a Porsche tester I have one.

We have got to get you sorted before next weekend.
