Hi All

As the title says ..........

I was travelling to work this morning 5 miles into the journey and the engine just stopped running almost like the fuel had been turned off gradually and came to a gentle rest [:-]

I tried to restart and amazingly it started I was able to travel another mile + and it stopped again

so AA were called and obvious checks executed most important being no output from the coil so obvious thing was to try a replacement DME fortunatley OPC sheffield carry them in stock I didnt have a spare []

replaced the DME same problem

there we have it so any suggestions will be appreciated and tried, AA guy suggested motion sensor from flywheel but definatley no feed from the coil to the distributor.

does it ever end [] LOL

What about the coil iteself??

There is also the crank sensor or speed sensor? The speed sensor symptoms are the engine runs but when you slow and disengage the clutch the revs will drop down to idle, but if your speed sensor is cream crackered the engine revs will continue to drop past idle rpm and stall (well those were the symptoms on my Focus, not sure if they would be exactly the same on a 944).

I would say the reference sensor, but the reference sensor is only used on start up, so once the engine is running it will run fine until you turn it off and you'll not be able to start the engine again.

your motor has a weak spark will but not enough to start it, coil pack was changed but no change, but when one of the pulse sensors was removed we found a lump of metal on it where it has picked it up from is anyone's guess... will be spending some more time on it on monday mate...

That's not bad service - a work report on the forum on a Friday evening.
Well done that S.Yorks indie.

[;)] A replacement ECU has been obtained via Andrew Sweetenham Promax and the car is now running again It started immediatley the ECU was changed so Im a happy bunny now the problem has ben solved thanks JC and J Mac diagnosed correctly towards the end of last week.

Another one of those mysterious 944 problems to add to my experience [8|]

Stories of ECU's packing up seem to be becoming more and more common across various forums - not epidemic proportions yet, but just a noticeable increase in frequency. Will be interesting to see if this develops further. I wonder if it is more prevalent on cars that have had leaking issues where water may have got onto the ECU at some point.
