Engine knocking noise

Hi Andy,

Difficult to tell from your video but most likely it’s just a sticking (hydraulic) tappet, especially if it only happens when you’ve not run the engine for a while, meaning that the oil has drained from the tappets. Depending upon when it was last done an oil change might help, but unfortunately there’s not much that can about it other than to strip the head(s) and examine the tappets.

Maybe you should drive the car more regularly???

Thanks Jeff very helpful.
It has a warranty from the specialist garage I bought it from but I don't want to lose the car again if not necessary, especially as we have a summer now! Had it 4 months... a month+ of that it was in the garage for new turbos (so new oil I assume).
I'll send the vid to them and see what they suggest.

Understood Andy, and a good idea to forward the video to your specialist for comment. The Porsche Independents are much more flexible than the official dealers, so your specialist might be able to give you a convenient short time-slot so that they can get the car on a lift and home-in to the source of the sound more readily.

I can’t say for certain but I wouldn’t have thought that replacing the turbos would have necessitated an oil change (perhaps the specialist can advise?), and ATM I wouldn’t be unduly concerned unless the sound becomes more persistent.

Compared with in-line engines where the engine is encased and sound deadening treatment can be applied readily to the bonnet and bulkhead, etc., the F-6 engines can always seem noisy due to (unattenuated) sound radiated from the heads, blocks and crankcase being reflected off the ground and out the sides of the car.
