do engine lids that are for the earlier (pre 73) style metal grilles allways come with the holes for the PORSCHE script and the model type script

I want the earlier grile style but no lettering, so if I can find a second hand lid am I bound to then have to fill the holes in ?

thanks
jonathan

Pretty sure there all came with holes (apart from the race bred ones).

The really early lids probably had less holes mind you . . these are the ones with the 911 script in the bottom right hand corner (in kind of italics).

Jonathan, If you have found any can you let me know, I need one now... don't mind early or later script as holes can be welded and have the old one as pattern for new holes...
Thanks

Gav,
Transend have them listed on their website, not sure if it's an up to date list though.

Gavin,

There was one on e-bay UK recently, but seems to have gone.

There' one in the US at the moment though: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7947549238&category=33645&sspagename=WD2V

Here's an engine lid located in the UK . . . no grill though (I love the grills . . . if you look carefully, you can see that each strip is individually numbered to help with assembly)

Thanks chaps found one yesterday... not cheap but at least I can send it back if it's not A1, and it's blasted and primed... which is nice[:D] Someone kindly reversed into mine and scarpered...[]

I have an early decklid available in good condition with the silver grill (complete with teeny tiny numbers). If anyone is interested in it I'll dig it out of the top of the garage and take some pics of it and post a very detailed description here.

I need to buy a lid, and am keeping an eye on the ebay sales but I would prefer to buy from someone in the club to be honest

I don't especially need the grille, as I just received a black early style one this morning, mind you if its in good nick I could be tempted to buy another one (!), as long as the lid has no rust and dents I would seriously be interested, how much would you want for it please

if its easier to send higher resolution pictures by email you can reach me on jparr@fosterandpartners.com

thanks a lot

Jonathan,

I've just nipped out to the garage, here's quick honest description of the engine lid. I wouldn't want to waste your time or my own so please let me know if you're still interested once you've read through and I'll take some detailed pics over the next few days when I have some time.

- Pre 73 engine lid with shiney aluminium grill...
- It looks like it was originally painted black but has been resprayed creamy white on the outside face only.
- Paint is generally tarnished with chips and scratches as it has been in the garage for a few years (but not a problem as you would want to respray anyway).
- There are no dents.
-The paint has been chipped around some edges of the lid where it has been sat on various garage floors. There is a small amount of surface rust where the bare metal has been exposed but I had a quick rub with a piece of wet n dry and the rust is easily removed to expose shiny steel.
- There is a small amount of surface rust on one of the inside top corners where the paint has come away from the lid. Again a quick rub with wet n dry exposed shiny steel.
- There are the holes along the bottom edge where the P O R S C H E letters would have gone.
- There are also two holes in the centre and about 1ft from the bottom edge where I assume the model number would have been.
- It looks like something was once mounted onto the lid as there are 4 or 5 small holes running 3" below the grill along the length of the lid (luggage rack?). These have been repaired with small squares of sheet steel spot welded onto the back of each hole. This shouldn't present too much of a problem as I'm sure the buyer would fill these holes professionally before spraying.
- On the reverse of the lid on the lower pressed steel panel it there are two rectangular cut-outs with a screw-hole at each end which I assume would fit small courtesy lamps (I don't know whether these would be original cut-outs?)
- The grill is shiny aluminium and is very straight when looking directly at the engine lid. If you look along the length of the bars they are very straight. Some of the bars are slightly wavy if you look directly across the bars. The bars are extremely 'malleable' and could be straightened if you had a lazy sunday afternoon, a deckchair and a few beers to while away the time.

If you are still interested after this open and honest description please leave a message and I'll email some pics.

I'd really like to sell the engine lid and grill complete but I'm sure Phil would take the grill off your hands if you didn't need it (and it's a bit of a trek between Norwich and Cheltenham!)

Cheers,
Rich

P.S. If you're wondering why someone with an 83 SC has an early decklid in the garage, I got it with a load of parts about 5 years ago and always planned to respray it silver, refit the P O R S C H E letters and mount it on a wall in the office to use as a magnetic pinboard.

in a word yes and pictures of the lid and the grilles would be great, can you send asap, and could I ask you to give me an idea about price please

I think those extra rectangular holes are for the rear number plate lights ?

Another one's popped up on ebay

that one was at £100 last time round and had no bids, he also wouldn't send any pictures of the inside surface which I though odd
