Jonathan,
I've just nipped out to the garage, here's quick honest description of the engine lid. I wouldn't want to waste your time or my own so please let me know if you're still interested once you've read through and I'll take some detailed pics over the next few days when I have some time.
- Pre 73 engine lid with shiney aluminium grill...
- It looks like it was originally painted black but has been resprayed creamy white on the outside face only.
- Paint is generally tarnished with chips and scratches as it has been in the garage for a few years (but not a problem as you would want to respray anyway).
- There are no dents.
-The paint has been chipped around some edges of the lid where it has been sat on various garage floors. There is a small amount of surface rust where the bare metal has been exposed but I had a quick rub with a piece of wet n dry and the rust is easily removed to expose shiny steel.
- There is a small amount of surface rust on one of the inside top corners where the paint has come away from the lid. Again a quick rub with wet n dry exposed shiny steel.
- There are the holes along the bottom edge where the P O R S C H E letters would have gone.
- There are also two holes in the centre and about 1ft from the bottom edge where I assume the model number would have been.
- It looks like something was once mounted onto the lid as there are 4 or 5 small holes running 3" below the grill along the length of the lid (luggage rack?). These have been repaired with small squares of sheet steel spot welded onto the back of each hole. This shouldn't present too much of a problem as I'm sure the buyer would fill these holes professionally before spraying.
- On the reverse of the lid on the lower pressed steel panel it there are two rectangular cut-outs with a screw-hole at each end which I assume would fit small courtesy lamps (I don't know whether these would be original cut-outs?)
- The grill is shiny aluminium and is very straight when looking directly at the engine lid. If you look along the length of the bars they are very straight. Some of the bars are slightly wavy if you look directly across the bars. The bars are extremely 'malleable' and could be straightened if you had a lazy sunday afternoon, a deckchair and a few beers to while away the time.
If you are still interested after this open and honest description please leave a message and I'll email some pics.
I'd really like to sell the engine lid and grill complete but I'm sure Phil would take the grill off your hands if you didn't need it (and it's a bit of a trek between Norwich and Cheltenham!)
Cheers,
Rich
P.S. If you're wondering why someone with an 83 SC has an early decklid in the garage, I got it with a load of parts about 5 years ago and always planned to respray it silver, refit the P O R S C H E letters and mount it on a wall in the office to use as a magnetic pinboard.
