Engine limiter cuts in before the red line

I'm wondering if I have a fault with the ECU, fuel cut-off or the rev counter. The engine limiter cuts in at around 5K, well before the red-line at around 6.5K. I'm fairly sure it didnt use to do this, and the rev needle has become rather bouncy. Anyone any thoughts on this? Anyone know if the potentiometer in the rev counter adjust this?

Just a thought, is the rev counter reading wrong, and you are bouncing off the limit at 6500 revs? [:eek:]
 
the needle only bounces when the revs drop, not as they rise (e.g when changing gear). WDo you know what the small potentiometer is for (its on the back of the rev-counter).
