Engine management Light

Hi all,

nee to the porsche 987.1 Boxster ownership and forum. have owned my lovely 06 Boxster for a few months now, however on a drive back from Windsor the dreaded engine management light came on, requesting me to go to a repair centre.

should I be concerned and can I still drive the car?

also any recommendations of a good independent private garage or mechanic in the Harrow or Watford area?

any help and advice appreciated

Suggest a good look through the Porsche Post towards the back for independent specialists listing will help you find one nearby.

Once found, they will advise if you should drive it there etc.

Have you checked the oil level and the coolant?

I have an 987.2 and that recently threw an engine light after a cold start. The engine felt like it was on 5 cylinders, but it cleared itself after a few mins, light went off, all has been well since, so things can happen and go!

Jatin,

Provided the CEL is solid and not flashing you’re OK to drive the car, but I would limit use and performance as much as possible. I suspect that your problem is exhaust/cat related - hopefully just a dirty or defective Lambda sensor - and a quick diagnostic check should identify the source.

As said, have a look in PP or Google ‘Porsche Specialists’ for your area. Porsche Torque are in Uxbridge if that’s any help. I’ve no experience of them but I think they’re a decent outfit.

I plugged in the OBD2 reader and below is the fault? Any advice welcome.

‘Secondary air injection system insufficient flow Bank 2’ ?

any idea what this means and is it still safe to drive?

It’ll be part of the emissions system Jatin. Air is injected into the exhaust to reduce reduce/burn-off residual products of combustion.

It sounds as though a valve might be sticking, preventing sufficient air reaching the Bank 2 exhaust? Try Googling ‘Boxster secondary air injection system fault’ for information and potential remedies.

Thats an emissions related error - as such - likely no issue with driving it....

If it were my car - plug in the diags reader - clear the fault - get some some good ( not supermarket ) 98 or 99 ron in the car - take it out - get it nice and hot and drive it like its only got 3 gears for a little while ( within limits engine and legal of course ), repeat and if the light stays off - job done - if not - then you need someone to take a look - I think the conventional wisdom is that its rarely the secondary air pump that's the issue - more likely things have got a bit choked up due to lack of "italian tune ups" and shorter journeys - but that all of course is internet diagnosis at its best but in general these cars don't like "gentle" all the time.

FWIW - my previous daily ( a toyota ) used to throw an engine management light once every 8 to 10 months - complained of slow response on an o2 sensor - Toyota diagnosed it as failing sensor - wanted 400 quid to fix it and said " bad things will happen if you dont" - 10 years and 140K miles later it still did it once a year - and it never had an issue with MOT emissions etc.

I cleared the fault with reader and so far the light has remained off. I contacted AMS Porsche and they suggested same, to give it some as could just be fault sensor or a sticky valve. I only ever use Super Unleaded 98/99 Ron.

was thinking of getting some BG44 fuel cleaner, take I a long journey to run it through the system, maybe help clear some deposits.

Will book into AMS Porsche as recommended, they seem like a really good bunch with some honest advice.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the snake oil fuel cleaner - just some non supermarket ( low or no ethanol ) fuel ( ron largely doesn't matter so much - but what the hell - put the good stuff in - but not all 98 rons are made equal ) the main reason being the "detergents" that the premium brands put in to combat choking up

Put good fuel in it and enjoy using it up - I would suggest a couple of tanks of vpower or esso super doo-dah and abuse the car a bit on a decent run out, but if the light stays off - it's fixed......

 
Have to agree with the above post.

too easy to take it easy in the UK congestion.

I tootle around in mine due to traffic, but it has an Italian Service every month when the Boss is not with me.

I only use 95 ron but always Shell. Have done this for the last year, no issues except that one 5 cylinder moment a few months ago when a simple drive cleared it's throat once the cold start had cut out.

If you are getting over 32 mpg, then drive it hard when allowable, or pretend you don't have 5th and 6th on a good motorway run. Aim for 27 mpg.

Fun doing this too!
