Engine Mounting

I bought my first 944 yesterday and there is a vibration at 3000 rpm which makes the gearstick vibrate and make a noise like a trapped wasp. I believe this may be a failed engine mount. IF so do I risk catastrophic damage if I go above 3000rpm???... I also saw a rather scary article recently in Porsche Post about changing the mounts on a 928, is the 944 simpler/cheaper....

I think you might find it just has missing / unseated rubber dampers in the gearknob.

Pull up the leather gaiter and then the rubber one underneath (I bet it will be split [;)]) and then you can pull out a spring clip at the bottom of the aluminium knob shaft (oo-er). After that the knob just pulls off.

There should be a rubber cap right at the end of the hole in the knob and also a diamond shaped collar that sits around the lever toward the bottom of the knob shaft. If they are present but not in the right place then try washing up liquid on the outside of the diamond one to let the knob slide over it, if they are missing they are not expensive from the dealer.

I left mine in a knob I exchanged at the national club event a few years ago so I know all about the noise, and it's as you describe. Hopefully a cheap fix and you can enjoy the car then.
 
I had my right engine mount changed last week at Porscheworx. My '89, S2 has just done 68k, I got vibration at 2100 rpm and a banging noise over pot holes and bumpy roads. An original part hydrolyc engine mount from Porsche is £159 + VAT, then add your labour. A new mount makes so much difference! So much smoother.

thanks for the advice, but I think it may be more serious as the whole stick vibrates quite a lot at the magic 3000 rpm, and the wasp noise is the sound audible in my left ear at the time, at the moment I am too scared to go much above 3000 rpm in case I break something, which is a bit boring....

How many hours labour should I budget for??

Hi Chris, It's between 1.5 to 2 hours labour. I got charged 2 becuase i asked him to do other little things aswell. £45 per hour labour from Porsche inipendent specialist, £159 for mount +VAT. So it's not a cheap thing at all!

I'm gonna check out the Knob thingy to on Sat! Let us know how you get on Chris.

s a lot simpler to change.... still I guess I will soon know...

Wo! Lets confirm, We are talking about the right hand engine mount on an 944 S2 right???
1 mount 159+VAT, £6 for two new bolts and 2 hours labour.
I don't think the engine mount on the LUX 2.7 is that different at all.
(8 hours is a full days works with no tea and ham sandwiches):ROFLMAO:

Yeah best to double check Chris.

The engine mount sounds a horrible job but in simple terms you have to lift the engine slightly out of the bay and then unbolt the old mount. Slide in a new one, bolt it up and lower the engine in place.

If you fancy a trip up the M4 then www.JZmachtech.com have a fixed price of £235 +vat inc parts and labour for a 2.7 engine mount (and they are normally not the cheapest)
