Engine mounts, how difficult are they to replace?

Sorry if this has been covered recently but i cant find any info on doing the job.

Is it an engine out job or can they be replaced with the engine in situ? Also the same question for replacing the front crank seal and also the manifold gaskets as one of them has started to blow a little until warmed up.

As I understand it, replacing the mounts is not an engine out job, but I believe you have to remove the steering rack and lower crossmember (is there any other kind I ask myself?), and support the weight of the engine. So sounds involved, but not impossible.
 
I haven't done it without taking the engine out, but you don't have to do it that way. There might be a bit of disassembly however, and I'm not sure how you support the engine unless you have a hoist as a trolley jack under the alloy sump is an engine out job to fix.

It's going in for a crank oil seal soon, so il get them done at the same time. Then its off to the body shop, gulp!!!!!! LOL

No need to remove the rack but you will need to loosen and slide of the steering column UJ as you drop the cross member.

The biggest problem I have found is that when you support the engine it tends to drop to one side. This means fitting the new mounts is an absolute bitch.

The only tip I can give is support the engine as squarely as possible and it shouldnt be too much of a problem.

Also dont buy the cheap mounts available as I am told they dont last.

I'm about to replace mine as i get a very disconcerning vibration through the bodywork on idle.Ordered two from design 911 last year along with the induction kit.Still waiting for them to arrive!!! Bricking it now you say the engine mounts are a pain to do.May "employ" my local garage to fit them!! Even though he moans everytime he see's me pull up.I just tell him its a learning curve for him and a job less for me hehe!!
 
It will take around 4 hours to swap the mounts. Basically you need to support the engine, remove wishbones, remove lower mount nuts, lower the crossmember (its probably easier to unbolt the rack) and then remove the m8 bolts in the top of the engine mounts. Those bolts are a pain to get to (worse on a turbo). Or just pay someone else to do it & save your knuckles.
