Engine Mounts - Puzzled

Evening all

I am a bit bamboozled at the moment. My car, which suffered maybe a tiny bit of vibration on start up, quickly disappearing, has had its belts and rollers done. On collection the car had really noticeable vibration as I drove away from garage which kinda subsided and went away. Next day pretty heavy vibration on start up, lessening a bit as warmed up. Took it back to garage to recheck belts etc. All ok. Started at garage, all ok, drove home, all ok. Left car 2 days, started up and horrendous vibration again! It did lessen once heated up.

Garage reckons engine mounts, they were replaced 3 years (17k miles) ago. Unsure if genuine hydraulic ones where used but did think so.

Does this sound like failed engine mounts? Just a bit weird that it all started after I had work done. Can they suddenly fail like that? I would have thought they would fail more gradually but tbh nothing else makes sense!

Thoughts?

The variable for me here Stu is that you had the belts done. My first question would be has the balance belt me done properly? I can presume there were no issues before?
 
Was my thoughts too Rob. Well respected Glasgow indy who quite happily stripped it all back to re-check his work and found all to be correct.

Also, with the vibration diminishing as engine heats up makes me think it's not the balance belt and indeed an engine mount.

Just still struggling with the whole coincidence thing.

I manage a fleet of diesel locos and there is never such a thing as a coincidence mate. Not saying your indie has done something wrong but something must have happened to make your vibration issue worse. Maybe your mounts are suspect and this has exacerbated it??? Do you still have the heat shield on the exhaust side engine mount?
 
Pretty sure all heat shields are present and correct. It's a head scratcher indeed. I just can't see an engine mount suddenly failing. However I could be wrong. I can't really see what else could be the cause bar an engine mount however.

Shooting in the dark a bit, but I have had problems with the balance belt slipping after belts being done. That led to them being mis-aligned, but they slipped back into alignment after a time.

Yours sounds too much like it's associated with startup to be this, but it may be worth checking balance belt tension to be sure. I'm also assuming that 'well-respected indie' does know what he's talking about, although I have had my belts mis-aligned when done by an indie, so it's not impossible.


 
I had them fully check over everything they had done and they spent a full morning re-checking everything. Then when I collected it I started it from cold and it was fine. They said there was no discernible vibration when they had it. And there wasn't when I collected it so I thought that they possibly didn't own up to an error but fixed it anyway to save face, and all would be good. And it was all the way home, 20 miles. Then I start it up a day and a half later and the vibration on start up was very pronounced again, easing a bit once heated up but still quite evident. Left it and started again today, just as bad. So it will be going back to the garage again this week. A balance belt issue would not come and go, nor would an insecure part. I just can't help thinking a failed/failing engine mount could produce all the signs I am getting. But not comfortable with the fact that the car was almost vibration free when I dropped it off and I seem to have had some sort of instant engine mount collapse whilst at the garage. Can an engine mount do this all of a sudden? Engine mounts failing in my experience have all done so in a gradual manner.

I am happy to have the engine mounts done if they are gubbed but will be raging if I get them done and the vibration does not go away!
