Engine mounts/vibration

Following on from my earlier post can anybody help with this problem.
I've got a 89 S2, 70k which has had belts changed a few thousand miles ago and ran perfectly ok, except that i thought it vibrated a bit below 2000 revs, so i bought new engine mounts (non original) and had them fitted.
The car now vibrates badly below 2000 but once above that seems nice and smooth.
I've now looked at the old mounts which look perfectly ok, but on checking the workshop manual it states that, when new, they should measure 70mm +/- 1mm between bearing surfaces - my old ones are 63-64mm which suggest they have collapsed slightly.
Unfortunately i didn't check the new ones before fitting.
Has anybody had their mounts changed recently and do they know what type was fitted/did it cure the vibration/who fitted them/how much did it cost?
I need to do something about them as my fillings are getting shaken out, but before i go back to my mechanic i want to be armed with as much information as possible.
(PS- you can rule out bad workmanship, mis-timed belts, poor engine set up as the cars ran perfectly before and still does once 'on the move').
I live in South Cheshire and it would be good to compare with somebody elses car to mine to see how it should feel as i've never driven another 944.
Sorry for the ramble.
Cheers
Max
