engine mounts

just had the car back from a service and the report says the engine mounts need changing as its causing a vibration in the cabin. Is this some thing i can change my self ? Has anybody done them?

thanks

I've never done it myself, but as long as you can support the engine adequately, the mounts come out from the top. There are 3 bolts holding the mount to the body, and a single nut which holds the mount to the engine carrier.

Are they sure it is an engine mount? The transmission mount is a more common culprit, but you can usually tell when it is going when you get a 'clonk' when coming on/off power.

thanks richard i will listen out to see if i can here a knock sound. Just had the major service and on the report it said rear engine mounts :-/ is the transmission mount a diy as well ? they also said the top mounts need attention so will get that booked in to JZM as i don't fancy messing with the suspension

thanks

If you put it in 2nd and put you foot on and off the throttle a bit aggressively, you'll soon hear if the transmission mount is thumping on the underside just behind the seats. Again, you need to be able to support the transmission to change it. It is diy-do-able, but I personally wouldn't myself - it is a lot easier if it is up on a car lift with the aid of a transmission jack.

If they say it is the engine mounts, then that's probably what it is.

ok thanks richard next question if anyone has upgraded there engine mounts what did they go for there seams to be the choice of solid or semi-solid or just the OME not sure what to go for.

Quite a common upgrade on the 911uk forums seams to be semi solid rss mounts. I think around £260 for the pair from design 911. I plan on getting mine changed but I'm not sure if they would be too much for daily use.

I replaced mine with oem, and they are fine, not sure whether the uprated mounts may be a bit harsh? But sure somebody must have fitted them and will be along to review. Easy enough job, bottom nut is hardest part, but a bit of penetrating fluid soon had it removed.

Think there was a thread on 991uk.com about much-reduced engine mounts for sale somewhere; might be well worth a look!

Hi there

yes ive recently replaced with OEM - followed the article from Richard and easy to do.

All good in the hood now.

Fitted the RSS engine mounts a few months back and they are superb.

A little harsh to start with but once bedded in they allow the engine note to be really heard.

They also really tighten up the rear end. The engine really feels part of the car, not deciding to join in when it feels like it !

Is that a c4s or a turbo or a c2?

Fitted to a C2.

Considering they cost less than the standard mounts I think this mod is a no brainer.

The amount of play in the mounts I took off was dreadful. I bet the engine was really moving about !
