Engine Mounts

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my experience in changing the engine mounts today in hope it helps you all and serves as a friendly warning.

Using a comprehensive guide I found online, by rmeuropean.com, I set out to undertake this straightforward task. I was at the stage of reassembling and tightening all bolts to torque ... Guide said 85nm for bottom mount nut to engine carrier and 65nm for two top bolts. Bottom went on fine. Whilst tightening one of the top two bolts I really felt that it was far too tight already, even though they were easy to turn given the great leverage of the typical long torque wrench. Then, you guessed it, snap!!

After extracting the broken stud I reverted to tightening the top two bolts by feel with my regular sized ratchet. Lesson learnt and all back together. Phew!

I later did some more research though and found two blogs, one is a guide by georgeco specr53, confirming the top bolts should only be tightened to 25 foot pounds, about 34 nm!

Just wanted to let you all know. Not saying which is right or wrong but hope this saves you the headache I had with this relatively simple diy job. I know which guide I'll refer to in the future (goes without saying that I checked for a technical guide on the forum first but doesn't seem to be one).

All the best,
John.

Hi, I bought them from OPC Hatfield and from memory paid £200 after our discount. I considered aftermarket but these seemed a fair price. I also considered semi solid but I only use the car for street use so could not see the benefit. Cheers, John.
