Morning all, I am trying to determine if the engine in a 1963 356b 1600super is the correct one for the car. I know that the front cover with the number is removable and so if that is original it would appear that the engine is correct, but i have read that the number is stamped somewhere else on the actual crankcases themselves. Where exactly are they and what would they look like. Will it be the engine number on the stamp or a number to identify all three parts ,I.E left and right crankcases and front alternator mount?
Many thanks Cj

The engine number is indeed stamped onto the rear part of the engine that which contains the oil pump which is called the "Third Piece" the engine type and the engine number are also to be found on the two halves of the crankcase usually stamped on the protrusion on top of the engine which holds the bolts for holding the crankcase together usually the second one forward from the Third Piece which is at the back of the engine. They are often covered in oil and dust but are visible on the crankcase under the oil filter. The type number and engine number will tell you what the engine is and whether it is correct for the car. There are another two numbers which are found near the clutch housing in front of the fan housing, which should be the same number on both halves. This means that both sides of the crankcase were machined together and are probably original.
