Engine number question ?

This may sound daft but does anyone know were I can find the engine's number on the block or head? The engine in my car is a replacement unit., haven't quite got round to updating the DVLA log book on this and my insurers would like the number.

BTW The car in question is an 84 Lux, the engine is either an 85 or 86 2.5 NA.
 
No idea where to find number but tax payers money advertising from DVLA is thretning (sp) to come and cut your bits off is you don't get a new style log book by some time in July. If you don't have one that would give insurance companys another excuse not to pay out if worst came to worst.

note especially:
"Why do vehicle keepers need a new V5C?
All motorists are asked to ensure they are issued with the new V5C registration certificate, as after 30th June 2005 failure to produce a V5C could cause problems when selling a vehicle. After this date, motor traders and private buyers may refuse a sale if the vehicle keeper is unable to produce the new certificate."

(i.e. you only need it to sell it. and most sellers will be happy with the old one anyway).

You can also get your old V5 returned (if you ask) in case you're worried about losing information on your car.

Thanks for the response's, to be honest its not the DVLA I'm worried about. I already have my new V5C (with inacurate engine no.!), I only need the engine number to set up my new insurance policy, must be there some were!
 
When I bought my 944S2, I spent about 5 minutes under the bonnet with the guy I was buying the car off looking for the engine number and couldn't find it from the description of where it is in the manual - I gave up and bought the car without confirming it in the end (I did confirm the VIN and I did a full HPI check).

Does anyone have a large, zoomed in picture showing exactly where the engine number should be?

Ah ha thanks for that! Ok to answer your questions, yes when I purchased the car I had it inspected so the engine and chassis matched the log book. About a year and a half into ownership of the car I had an "incident" and wrote off the engine... Ooops !

The replacement engine was purchased through Porschapart and was instaled for me. Problem is I forgot to update the engine number at the time.

To answer the question about the quick rack, originaly the car had a manual rack. I didnt really like the fact that it required a little too much twirling betwean locks and lacked imediacy when initialy turned away from dead ahead. At the time I had my little brothers 106 Rallye (S1 1.3 with manual rack) to compare it to, couldnt believe how feelsome and direct the steering in that car was and how poor the 944's was incomparison.

The replacement unit is effectivley a power rack (with power disconected) neatly adapted to fit onto a manual shaft, in short it rocks! Much more direct, much more natural, downside is that its a pain to park. In truth this has only reduced the turns down form 3.5 to 3 but it makes quite a difference in terms of feel. Also this rack bolts direct onto the beam behind with no rubber insulating it I guess in terms of feel this also helps.

In some respects I wish I had saved myself the hassle and simply bought a 944 with power steering but I've ended up with something fairly unique.

The rack was purchased through club auto sport, cant remember their web address off hand.
 
Interesting about the rack. I elected not to replace my power rack with a manual one and am disconnecting the hydraulics. I have got a Vauxhall Corsa (current model) electric steering motor to go on though - apparently it's what the Escort rally boys fit and it can be switched off at will. Once that's on I'd be very keen to find a quick rack - about 2.4 turns rings a bell as being right although a mate had a Manta with a 1.8 turn rack once upon a time and that would have been nice with a bit of assistance.

Basicaly it was just the internals and should be suitable for converting both 944's with power steering and obviously 968's. Porsche GB may have the odd one lying around but doubt it would be cheap. It certainly wasn't a common upgrade and apeared to be aimed at clubman motorsport customers.

The turn on/off-able electric power steering gear sounds like a good and pretty logical route to go down. To be honest I can cope with out, maybe if I got my hands on an even quicker rack I would be tempted to go down this route.

With a bit of ingenuity and access to a machine shop it might be possible to convert something like a Manta quick rack to replace the slow Porsche item. Possibly cheaper too.
 
Thanks, my rack was worn so I added an extra bush to get throught the MOT, however it is a little tight robbing the steering of some feel. I want to replace it but fancy a slightly quicker one hence the question.

I will of course pass on any info I find, less one kit if they are available and not cripplingly expensive [;)]. He did tell me last time I saw him about getting a 968 splitter for someone. It's a motosport part and apparently they are sold at cost in some situations so the genuine (968 Turbo S) splitter at something like £240. I think he said the guy had the p/n though and I'm not sure he knows where to find them. He likes a challenge though [:D][FONT=verdana,geneva"]
