Engine numbers

Are engine numbers in the same format for the 924S and early 944 (1986 to 1988 MY)?

Ie 43G*****, 43H***** and 46J*****

I've noticed a few other numbers, like 41G, 46G and 46H

Can anyone make any sense of them, what are the differences, and when they were produced?

I can't tell you from the top of my head, but remember the 924S got a slightly detuned version of the 2.5 engine (150bhp vs 160bhp) until the last year of production, so maybe there was a different code to reflect that?
