Engine oil change

Hi All

I want to change my engine oil and filter, as current oil is 12 months old (only covered 2500miles). I was going to go for Mobil One. Does any one have a comment on this, and where is the cheapest place to buy engine oil?
Total mileage is 61000miles.Standard C2.

Thanks

...and where is the cheapest place to buy engine oil?
...

if you are a member of Costco then a 4L is £23.37 (inc. VAT); if you happen to be crossing the English Channel then it is even cheaper, a 5L of Mobil One in any French supermarkets is twenty something Euros...

I always thought Mobile One was too thin for the 964 leading to annoying little oil leaks.
I was recommended Castrol Magnetec 15-40W. Bit thicker but good quality.

I have probably opened a can of worms here so I apologise in advance....

Mobil 1 0W-40 probably but Mobil 1 15W-50 is quite popular for 964s although Porsche's recomendation for the 964 is either 0W-40 or 5W-40.

Ian.

Thank you I will go for the Mobil One 15W-50 from Costco.

C2, Cup exhaust pipe, straight through no silencer(across car) with 90mm tail pipe, drilled air box and new Conti N2 with 17 inch Cup One Wheels (design 92 ).

Not quite sure what all the numbers mean but is this what most people put in the 964.Was going to change the oil at the weekend and put mobil 1 as that is what is in it at the moment, but not sure what to get at the now??.

I'm not really au fait with the subtleties of the 964 yet, but in 944 circles the 0w40 Mobil 1 is considered too thin whereas the 15w50 is very popular. I'd expect the same to be the case for the 964 as the engines are of similar vintage.

The problem with 0w40 is that it is too thin and the tolerances of 80's engines (we're talking design, not manufacture) are too wide so the thin oil gets burned excessively or finds places to leak from whereas thicker oil stays more where it's supposed to be.

I was just in the process of typing a reply when Fen's message got posted. Basically - what he said!!!

Castrol Magnatec is fairly popular (10W/40) and the 15W/50 Mobil 1 will be fine. Silkolene Pro-S is reckoned to be good too.

Anything less than 10W is very thin when cold and will promote leaks as Fen said.

1980's technology and 21st Century oils are not necessarily good partners.

Dave

Ah a good old fashioned oil debate ... reminds me of the 993 register :)

I am currently running Mobil 1 15W-50 in my 964 but I am minded to reduce the viscosity (especially the W) on my next oil change in line with Porsche's recommendation. In effect try to go thinner each time until I get problems with either leakage, oil pressure or excess burning.

I did this on my 993 over the last few years and for winter I am now running on Mobil 1 0W-40 with zero problems with oil leaks, pressure or excesive burning and feel as a result of the 0W that I am getting better cold start protection. Obviously I am talking high quality synthetic oil only (Motul, Sylkolene, Mobil 1).

I understand that many 964 engines are getting on in miles and wear but are you all telling me thinner oils should not be tried on a nice tight 964 engine?

Happy to be educated by those with more knowledge on the 964.

Ian.

To be honest I'll probably use Texaco Havoline 5w40 synthetic like I have in my BMW and used in my freshly rebuilt 944 Turbo, though that did blow up - I think due to a fuelling failure rather than oil-related however.

Thank you for your replies [:D]

I have Mobil 1 0w-40 in the engine at the moment with a small leak that drips on to the front of the heat exchangers,so may be will try Mobil 1 10w - 40 .That is a bit thicker ? and also semi or fully synethic.

Ian

Mobil 1 is all fully synthetic and I believe it only comes in 0w40 and 15w50 varieties. The 15w50 is thicker.

Well that's it [&:] .....thank you for all the answer but i'm still non the wiser [:D] not sure what to get ,but at the end of the day i suppose that they are all basically the same and not much between all.
I guess someone will correct me and confuse me even more [:D][:D][:D]

I hadn't made the connection between your car and the fact it looks like it might have a 964 engine in it. Not until I just read your tag line and didn't feel confident on commenting about 3.2 engines.

You are currently running Mobil 1 0W-40? so other than the small leak do you have any problems with low pressure and burning oil, etc? Has the engine been rebuilt or is it old? Does it leak when cold, hot or both?

You could try a thicker oil. In increasing thickness 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W-50. The left had number (W) represents it's relative thickness when cold, the right hand the relative thickness when hot. But it might not cure your oil leak. It's really difficult to diagnose without looking at an engine. What does the chap who looks after the car think?

Ian.

Hi

Yes it has got the 964 engine which is quite tight.Camtune looks after the car general apart from oil changes etc and they put the Mobil 1 0W 40W in .As it was due for a change i thought i would see what the general census was as for grade of oil in a hope that it might slow or stop the leak ( I'm not that lucky ) .

Ian

Made my mind up and went for Mobil 1 0W-40.Halfords did a 20% discount on the oil saving near on £20
