Engine Oil Level

Can anyone confirm to me the best way to check accurate engine oil level.
Are you better using the dipstick, or can you rely on the oil level gauge, seems a bit erratic.

I don't know whether this is "normal" but I've found that my oil gauge tends to under-read. I was a bit disturbed to notice it reading marginally into the red when idling as per Maurice's criteria above. A check of the dip stick showed oil halfway up the twisted section.

The gauge did move when I topped it up but even when the oil level was back up towards the "full" mark it was still only showing as just over half on the gauge.

Not a problem in itself as long as you know what the relationship is between the reading on the gauge and the dipstick.

The oil temperature gauge needs to get up to nearly 8 o'clock position. Somewhere on here there was something about what marks on the gauge coorespond to what temperatures (there is something here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=112479 ).

I need to drive mine all of the way to or from office (about 8 miles of no-chance-to-blast-it road) before it's ready for checking.

On my gauge: top of the red to top of the gauge seems to correspond to 1/4 to 3/4 of the dipstick range. ie the gauge is quite sensitive to the amount of oil.

This is the key. Refer to the gauge for an "˜on-going' reference to the oil level (means zilch when you're in motion) only when the oil's hot and you are stationary. This will give you a good indication, but there is no substitute for checking the dipstick level manually as you can actually see the level[;)]! i.e I wouldn't rely totally on the gauge - there seemed to be even more of a discrepancy between gauge and dipstick on the SC I used to own.

As said before these 993 lumps take some warming up, a trip around the block will just not do. Its best to sort your oil levels after a decent run, like 50 miles plus. Or if thats not possible go sit in a traffic jam for a hour, that sends the guage up.

A story.

I drove my 993 back from Switzerland.

All the way over the Jura the roads were frozen and the oill guage barely moved.

Through France the oill guage struggled to get above the red so I was convinced that it must be low.

So around the Chapagne area I dipped into a service station, bought a couple of bottles and was impressed to discover that they also had Mobil 1.

So, all topped up -- with an extra 1/4 litre for the car, we set off to the Chunnel.

Massive traffic, big wait, oil level comes up and up --- to --- on the high side.

2000 miles later and I haven't seen it low !

QED --- dipstick rules, OK ?

9k rpm, IMHO the full mark on the dipstick corresponds to halfway up the gauge ..

Cheers, Maurice.

It seems mine is normal after all and there is no cause for panic then!

Why do I get the impression that even if I was to hang onto the car for 10 years I'd still be learning stuff about it....? ;)
