Hey Guys, could anyone recommend some good engine oil, in the Haynes it says Castrol CR30 but couldn't find this at my local halfords and whats best Synthetic or Non Synthetic??

cheers, summers on its way!!!!!!

Hi ,
The 911SC manual says that a good premium grade of oil should be used also the handbook gives a grade chart for different temperatures. The oil choice for most I think will be a matter of what the owner is comfortable with.
The Bentley Manual says the following oils are approved for all Porsche engines.
Castrol syntec 5W 50
Castrol GTX. 5W 30, 10W 30 or 15W 50 (Europe only)
Exxon Superflo Supreme 15W 40
Mobil 1 5W30 or 10W 30
Sun oil / Sunoco Synthetic gold 5W 40
Texico/ Havoline 3 synthetic 5W 40

The Bentley did a survey of current 911 owners to see what oils they used which are.
Castrol GTX 20W 50 mineral
Quaker State 20W 50 mineral
Pennzoil 15W 50 mineral
Castrol GTX 15W 40 mineral
Shell Rotella T 15W 40 mineral
Valvoline Racing 20W 50 mineral
Mobil 1 15W 50 synthetic
Mobil 1 10W 30 synthetic
Mobil 1 5W 50 synthetic
Mobil 1 0W 40 synthetic
Mobil 1 20W 50 synthetic
Castrol syntec 15W 40 synthetic
Shell 10W 40 synthetic.

As I said earlier it a matter of owner choice, I use Quantum 10W 40 part synthetic (which is stock @ VW dealers) and I change it every year, my mileage is 3000 per year.
Hope this helps
Good luck
John

A good choice available it depends on how much you want to spend but as John implies change it often, maybe every 3-5k depending on type of use. I've used Castrol GTX back in the eighties, then Castrol Magnatec and recently Silkolene Pro S 15-50. Engine is still going strong at 153,000 miles, love to rebuild it one day with some trick parts though! [;)]
