Apologies yet again but my head hurts, reading past posts on engine oils - i'm still no clearer.

Recommendations please, engine oil for 37yr old 8v engine on 95k miles

Depends how good you want to go.
A good 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changes will be fine, or you could upgrade to a performance 10w-40 synthetic.
Cheers,
Guy

No offence to Opie(from whom I've bought synthetic oil for the BMW & synthetic gearbox oil for the 2 924S's) but I use ECP's QX brand 10 /40 semisynthetic for the 2 924 engines -one of which gets some trackday/sprint usage but overall low annual miles having bought a 25 litre drum for a bargain sale price & still plenty left.
Oil pressures in both at top of gauge although when very hot ,the track car drops on idle but immediately back up with revs, stays pretty clean & very little consumption considering both well over 100k miles & original engines at 35/36 yrs old.
Always use Porsche OE filter.

AFAIK Porsche don't make oil filters, so unless you like the box it comes in, I wouldn't pay extra for it.

Absolutely correct-I should have been clearer-I always use the specific Porsche specified one bought from ECP- normally the MANN brand.

I always used to use 10/40 oil. I had a N/A originally, a turbo for the last 17 years. After my engine re-build 9 years ago I swapped to 10-50 oil. I use millers oils, I'm sure any 10-50 would be just as good, but everyone will have their preferences. My reasoning, I was never happy with the low oil pressure when hot at idle (in both the turbo and N/A), both with over 100k clocked. 10-50 millers improves that for me. I originally thought it was oil pump and worn out engines, the rebuild killed that theory.

The Millers only do a Fully Synthetic then, all you did was change (Increase) the HOT Viscosity rating up from 40 to 50 hence why
the thicker film had a higher oil pressure when hot.

Did your rebuild include a Alusil hone / new pistons etc.. ?
Did you run the engine in with Running in Oil ? then Mineral for a few thousand miles before using the synth?

Here you go Roger, you might want to print this one out and frame it because . . .

It was only a matter of time! pointless to fight the Dark SIDE!
It's an age and grief thing (Women & car's... Tyres & Tits! always trouble)

In this thread I posted data from the handbook,
What Oil do you use? | Porsche Forum from Porsche Club GB

I live in the warm South so -10C is extremely rare - used mobil 1 15w40 and then fuchs Pro R 20w50 excellent oil pressure even on hot trackdays and much less consumption than with 10/40 or 0/40. 10/50 seemed to break down faster but no doubt improved now. Also used the millers synthetic 10-50 as relatively inexpensive.

Currently using petronas synthetic 10w40 in the cab which has much lower miles and is doing less than 1000 miles a year so not really putting any strain on oil!

Around 12 years ago when I was looking for an engine oil with high levels of ZDDP, it turned out VR1 didn't have quite as much as some people thought. Whether Valvoline had reduced the ZDDP I don't know, but I'm fairly certain Millers 15w50 CFS had more. You pays your money, and makes your choice. I'm not taking oil advice from a wheel polisher, when it comes to my turbochargers bearings though.

It probably hasn't (Valvoline got high ZDDP) content, Lindsey Racing told me to use a Mineral low-mid detergent old skool Oil once the MILLERS Mineral "running in" Oil had done it's job for 100 miles
for 3000 miles I used a MOTUL product Mineral classic 20W 50 (After 1950)

Only after the 3000 road miles did I go Semi Syth with Joe Gibbs XP5 20W50 Racing Oil which also has a ZDDP package, which gets changed after every 2.5 hours Race weekend event.
