Engine Oil

A popular choice is Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W-50 - fully synthetic but slightly more viscous than the 0W and 5W grades.

Just wondered which engine oil everyone finds the best for their car.

I have been advised to use 15w 40 semi synthetic, but all the sites (Shell,Mobile e.c.t) advise to use 5w 40 fully synthetic.
Local Porsche centre also advised 5w 40 Mobile 1

Now very confused about oil to use. [8|]

Thanks Chaps

M I think the advice you got suggesting 15/40 semi-synthetic is spot on. I use that grade of oil in my cars, and my preference is Castrol Magnatec Damen

Mark, my car has had Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W-50 for donkeys years but for the last couple of oil changes it's had Castrol RS Edge 0W-40. Never had any engine problems but then again the oil gets changed every 2000 miles! Don't think it makes that much difference what you use as long as it's changed regularly. Saying that, maybe it does if you plan on doing loads of track days. Martin

Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40, no leaks and approved by Porsche and as used by OPCs in Germany for 964RS I am told by Thomas...

Thanks for your help chaps. Had 20w 50 mineral for run in my refurbished engine. Change oil to 5w 40 and seems to smoke on start up,so just looking to try something else to try and cure problem .I hope[&o]

That's the opposite of what Unit 11 put in mine after the rebuild. They used 5W 40 for the run in period so that it had oil with a low 'cold' (5W) viscocity to protect it when starting from cold (when the most damage is done to the engine). Yesterday, when the run in period was completed, this was changed for 15W 50 mobil motorsport which has a higher 'hot' (50) viscocity to give it better protection at the higher engine temperatures experienced on track.

Have ordered some 15w 50 from Opie oils. Hope this helps the problem i have. Had to use 20w 50 as told to by engine builder. If there are any problems will have to go back to him. Thanks again all
