Engine out - up or down?

I have an engine swap to do on my wifes 86 lux.

Had a quick look in the Haynes manual and Clarkes garage. Both say remove from underneath.

I have an engine crane, any reason why it can't come out the top? Just looks easier, less bits to remove (suspension etc)

More than happy to take advice from those that have 'been there/done that'.

I do not enjoy a chalenge, much prefer an easy life!

On my S2 it was far easier to drop down and lift the rest of the car over it. Dropping the suspension is easy as you will be dropping the subframe down drop the whole lot as intact as you can. ISTR my brother said the problem going in or out from above is getting enough of an angle on the engine so you can twist it on to the torque tube / housing assembly. My brother also reckoned it would have been almost impossible from above without the adjustable balance bar we have on the engine crane to tilt the engine at just the right angle. Never did any of this myself though but 2 different ppl who have said it was much easier in or out from below.
 
The engine was installed from underneath in the factory, so its obviously the way its meant to be, have to be honest not heard of anyone taking it out from the top but I could be wrong.
I imangine it would be a real pain to take it up not even sure if it can be done, and you only need to drop the steering rack and crossmember in any case I think, gives you chance to check over the steering rack if nothing else [;)]
 
I did it on the drive through the bottom, lift the car, and slide it out.
Still cant believe how far forward you need to take the engine to clear the prop shaft!
 
Afraid so, not looking forward to my next job mind.... Clutch!! So another tip would be check the clutch when the enigne is out and make sure its ok or you'll be dropped the gearbox next time to change it [;)]
 
Ahem! and it will also go in from the top!
