Engine problem: Cylinder liner damage

Has anyone had a similar problem?. 2002 996 Carerra C4 (3.6), 38k miles. Took to my local independent for MOT and concern over oily smoke sometimes on start up. Just been told the cylinder lining in cylinder 6 and 5 has signs of scratching and needs a major rebuild. Cost of upwards of £5k. Is this common???

Any alternative solutions to a rebuild?.
 
Sadly it does appear so. Check out the Hartech website as they're as one of the best in understanding/repairing the problems by all accounts.
 
Yes pretty common I'm afraid.

Sad state of affairs when it happens to so many low millage cars.

Shame on you Porsche.

Even a Fiat Tipo would exceed.

Not sure if I have much confidence in that company that got there Oil sticker put under the trunk either!.
 

Common problem, i suspect the widespead use of a generic 10W-40 or similar doesn't help, as soon as these cars are run in i'd go onto a
synthetic xxW-50 with a bit of ZDDP, they use no oil so cat contamination is unlikely. bearing in mind i've been running an oil burning 928 GTS
for 16 years and the cats weren't harmed.
Hartech will fit a slightly lower temp thermostat too which helps maintain oil film strength.

I sometimes wonder if oil advised by OPCs is more related to financial than mechanical considerations?
 
If it's "only" signs of scratching you're lucky in some way... ;-)

Take it to Hartech for further assessment and recommendation, you could get away cheaper than 5K when there's no other damage occured.

 
If you want to frighten yourself witless, pick up a copy of 911 & Porsche World this month. There is a 9-page article about engine problems. No wonder the value of these cars has plummeted with scaremongering like that.

I've not read it, but do I take it that it's not good news for 996 owners?
 
Interesting conversation I am looking at this from a different angle the 996 is now a class one car in the Porsche club championship.
I have been thinking about building a race car on a limited budget so what I need is an early 996 with a blown engine ,this if we listen to the forums and magazines should be an easy task as there are so many cars out there with blown engines.

Guess what I cannot find one
