engine pulley came loose

I had loss of power steering today which followed by oil pressure guage dropping and brake warning light coming on.When I inspected I found that the front engine pulley bolt had come loose so I tightened it up so that I could at least put the car in the garage.
Within minutes the pulley bolt came loose again and I wonder if :
1.anybody else has experienced this problem and
2.Maybe I have to torque up the bolt to stop it happening again?

I will inspect further tomorrow as I feel a bit low with it at the moment and just hope its only a simple problem.

Just a guess but has the key (which stops the pulley spinning on the crank) sheared off? Not sure why you'd loose oil pressure or brake fluid though.

Could the pulley come loose again if the key has fallen out(is that possible?)
The oil pressure drop and brake fluid warning light went out after initially tightening up the bolt.

If that's the main bolt on the front of the pulley, I think it's meant to be torqued to some stupid figure. Several hundred foot-pounds, or so.

Oli.

That bolt should be v.tight - 230 ib/ft or NM cant remember which.

The oil pump drive gear is reliant on that bolt being tight - thats why you lost
oil pressure.

You will probably need a flywheel lock.

You lose oil pump drive when this happens, hence the loss of pressure. Youll need a flywheel lock to re-tighten it (along with a deep 34mm socket and a big torque wrench) I think and it needs to be 150 ft-lbs, or there abouts. Your car will very probably still be alright, so whilst its a pin in the arse, dont worry too much.

If you haven't got a flywheel lock handy might be worth a shot with it in gear and an assistant on the brakes.

Dont think there is a key, it relies on torque, lots of it [8D]

No key on the oil pump drive gear but there is for the timing and balance belt pulleys and a couple of mm on the aux belt pulley.

My engine was sounding terrible (and leaking oil and had oil in the water) is I swapped it. When i took it out I noticed that the bottom pulley was loose. The bottom balance belt pulley has a key which on mine was really worn. The keyway in the pulley is a strange shape or mine has worn a much larger groove!

tried to tighten up the bolt today with someone else sat in the car with foot on the brakes and in gear and couldnt tighten up to correct torque. Is there a way of locking the pulley sso that i can tighten the bolt to torque(i have no speciel tool)
cheers

Only a tool that will fit through where the starter engages. If you have breakdown cover then Id have the car recovered to a specialists.

I'd agree, and you have a few specialists, near you including Pro-9 in Redditch I think, PCT cars in Allesely, Coventry, and whom I use, EMC Motorsport in Saltely, Birmingham who won't be too far from you (it's around 40 minutes from Warwick to them).
