Engine pulse

Can anyone help me?
My 1979 924 39,000 miles has developed a pulsing engine, which is not good in slow traffic. What is going on here? the fuel delivery is ok, I think it's the cold start valve not switching off, does that sound plausible.
I live in West Wales closer to Ireland than England so I have to fix this one myself.

If you could you be a little more specific, there are people here that can offer some good advice.

What do you mean 'a pulsing engine'? Is it only only happening at low speeds and fine at higher speeds?
 
Hi Gary, Wow 39k on a 79. That must be special! Ok the only thing i can think of making an engine pulse, kinda like self reving when idle, could be the idle stabelisation valvue. It's probably clogged up over all those years. If your car has one it'll look like a metal tube (one way directio flow) with a ruber hose at each end with jubilie clips. It'll need soaking in carb cleaner overnight to dissolve the dirt. Thats if your car has a idle stabelisation valvue. My old MK2 Golf GTI suffered from it to. I could be completely wrong and may be a vacume pipe loose! Hope this helps.
