engine rattle on start

I have just got my first boxster on a 54 plate and the odd time on starting the car i get a short big end rattle any ideas?

Not quite sure what you mean by "big end", but in all likelihood this is caused by a loose lambda sensor or sensors in the exhaust. There are 4, two each side, and you just need a suitable spanner to tighten. Each side, one is behind the rear wheel/suspension, the other under the rear valance forward of the box near the cat.

if the exhaust design is similar to the 986 version, don't be suprised if it's the exhaust heat sheilds. These rust over time and rattle on start up. Once warm they expand more and the rattle goes away. Eventually they rust so bad that the rattle does'nt go away even when warmed up.

987 exhaust is different to 986, they do have protective heat sheild spot welded round pipe after cat ,
the support bar between the 2 silencers have been know to break

ideally you should take it to someone to get it checked out as i have had a few where the tappets have been poor or even let go through the cam cover....

Is this not the hydralic tappets? Sounds like a box of spanners being shaken for a few seconds when starting but only on occasion.

Most alarming when one first hears it.

For some reason it always makes me think of 4 or 5 3/8 Whit x 2" bolts shaken in an empty coffee jar (200gm) !! When first heard, combined with the blue smoke, I had a strange "oh, sh*t" feeling!!

I get this noise on the new car (posted a thread to ask if normal but nobody replied [:(]). It happens each time I start the car but goes off once it is all warmed through after a few miles. However, happy to hear it is not unusual!
