engine rebuild by the porsche shop

hello there i have a 1984 2.5 lux and although the engine seems fine i am considering a engine rebuild by the porsche shop.co.uk the price of this is 2000 + vat. the price includes the following::::




We use a good original Block / Crank / Pistons & rods / Cylinder Head. All of these are checked for wear / damage and measured against tolerances and only used if they meet these.



The cylinder head has new valve guides, valves; valve stems oil seals and is skimmed if necessary.



The Block has new piston rings, big end bearings, main bearings, and balance shaft bearings, con rod nuts, rebuilt oil pump



New oil pump drive, new water pump , cam belt / balance belt plus all tensioners & idlers. New cylinder head nuts & washers



All seals & gaskets, inc cam shaft, balance shaft, crank shaft, rear crank, sump & oil cooler, are replaced.



There are also a number of small components replaced, such as top hats, neoprene seals for the cam / balance shaft plus other like oil filter & spark Plugs.



The price does not include the retension and the warrantee is for 12 months and covers the whole engine. The only other thing to consider is the clutch as there is no extra labour involved in changing while the engine is out.


what do you all think??? is there anywhere else that does this in the north (leeds area) and is it worth doing all this just to make it run mint. i do plan on having the car for alot of years and if the engine is running like new then it should last it with all that been done. let me know what you think or if you know if any one else has had this done. thanks
 
Don't take this the wrong way, but why sped £2k on fixing an '84 Lux that isn't broken?

As an aside you can usually get anything Porsheshop sell for a good 20% less almost anywhere else.
 
i agree with Fen, why get the engine done when its fine now?
Rather get it tuned as best as can be.
Spend the rest looking after it, pampering it.
I am wondering about "my" '84 Lux
about to aquire it, but its been standing since 1998
i cant afford to get the engine done
need to get it checked out though
got any one in mind, i am in north london

I go along with Fen on Porscheshop prices. Whilst you could spend the money on something else, or get a replacement from a breaker for £500, there is a great deal of satisfaction to be had from having an engine that you don't need to worry about.

After giving it some thought, having it out rebuilt and put back for £2K doesn't seem too bad - a belt change, water pump and oil change is IRO £500 IIRC.
 
Might be worth looking at the Hartech website as well, they do rebuilds and have a better reputation than Pshop. I haven't used either but never heard anyone have a bad word about Hartech.

You could also try EMC Engines in Birmingham on 0121 328 2225. They are run by Kevin Eacock who prepares the racing 944 2.5 race cars for the club championship, but are basically an engine rebuilder. I know of one owner from another forum who had his Lux rebuilt with a performance increase in mind. Balanced and lightened crank, knife edging, polished ports etc and saw around 190bhp for (I think) circa £1500. Of course they do a standard rebuild as well.

I agree with Fen, unless it's smoking or rattly, I'd leave well alone - these engines go on forever if you look after them. Spend some of the money on new belts/rollers/water pump if you want piece of mind, and keep the rest for on-going maintenance. You never know, you might need a new clutch soon! (but I hope not) [;)]

At least have a compression test and a run on the dyno to see what sort of health the engine is in before thinking about rebuilds.

Personally I would get a leak down test carried out before spending any money. I recently had this done to my Turbo and was delighted to discover that my engine is in the best of health. Cost was about £50. I think the general idea is that they pump compressed air into the cylinders and measure the percentage which escapes. If the figure is less than 5% all is well (mine was between 3 and 4%). If above 5% they can then establish where the leakage is taking place. This way you can narrow down where any problem occurs. You may well have a perfectly healthy engine.
 
thanks for all your help i will consider all your points. oh and i have just had the clutch and belts and rollers replaced so i just have blowen the good part of a grand and a half so i thought i may as well keep on going making the engine perfect. body work and new interior next. we will see.
